Swaddle- just nighttime or naps too

LO is 4wks today, for the last wk she seems to be fighting sleeping during the day. When she does fall asleep she will only sleep for about 30m (or less) then she's awake and fussy. Nighttime doesn't seem to be bad- she sleeps anywhere between 3 & 5 1/2 hrs and goes right back down once I BF her. (I haven't swaddled her at night since it didn't seem like she liked it.)

Last night DD was fussy & fighting sleep. MH swaddled her and got her to sleep while I showered. She slept one of her long stretches & when I got her up to feed I noticed the swaddle which made me wonder if I should swaddle during the day too. What do you do with your LO?

Up until now (4 weeks) I have only been swaddling DS at night. But lately, like your LO, he seems to be fighting sleep during the day, and only sleeps really good when I'm holding him. If I put him down, he will only stay asleep for 20 or 30 minutes. Then he gets really overtired and fussy. So I'm thinking I might start swaddling him for naps too and see how he does.

  • I have only been swaddling at night, and am afraid my lo doesn't like it anymore. She is just trying to kick out and cries...but she didn't sleep at all last night not swaddled until I brought her to lay down with me.
  • We just swaddle at night. Mostly because it's one of the ways we differentiate between day & night sleeping.

    Same here.
  • We only swaddle at night, but it's with arms out since he hates them being confined.

Same for us. Day time naps no swaddle and are in the swing or on a blanket on the floor. Night time sleep with swaddle in the PNP bassinet.

  • We only swaddle at night, but it's only because she doesn't seem to need it during the daytime. When we first got her home, we swaddled her whenever she went for a nap or sleep. I say if that's what helps to settle your LO down for a nap, then go for it.

This but when visitors want to hold her during evening fussy time I have swaddled DS to buy a little time and it works for a short bit.

  • All swaddle, all the time.

I'm not worried about day/night - we have the same going to sleep routine no matter what.  Occasionally DD sleeps in the swing or something and then she isn't swaddled but otherwise, she'll go longer if swaddled.

I'm with rora - if it works, don't question it!
  • Until he gets his days and nights figured out better, we'll only swaddled at night. After that if he seems to need it during the day I'll swaddled him then too.

  • Nights, days, any time he needs the comfort. I'd never actually heard of only swaddling at night. Or caring about day sleep vs night sleep. As long as he sleeps, I'm happy! DS1 was swaddled throughout the day
  • Since we had another 5 1/2 hr stretch between feedings I'm not too worried about the mix up with day/night. I swaddled her back up for her last nap & she slept 2 1/2 hrs. We'll just have to do whatever works for the moment.
