This comes up a lot around here. The BNB is full of traditionalists, so overwhelmingly, you're going to hear that it's a boy's name. Etymologically speaking, that's correct. It's a boy's name from a surname that means "son of Emery." "Son" necessarily implies boy.
Usage-wise, it's pretty "unisex." It's skyrocketing in popularity for girls (jumping almost 600 spots in 10 years!), and has made a similar leap for boys. It's slightly more popular for girls than boys. (Ranked #244 for girls and #364 for boys). 473 more girls received the name than boys last year.
So, is it a boy's name or a girl's name? Yes and no. It depends on which information is more pertinent and important to you. Historically, it's a boy's name. Based on current popular usage, it's a unisex name that's slightly more pink than blue.
Shouting "BOY BOY BOY BOY" doesn't change the fact that it's currently being used more on girls. People once felt similarly about Ashley and Evelyn. But the fact that it has a much longer historical precedent for being used on boys, paired with the fact that we as a culture seem to be shifting away from an attitude of "THE GIRLS ARE USING IT ABANDON SHIP" towards boys' names makes it a very doable option for a boy, IMO.

I know several Emerson's. Unfortunately they are all girls. So even if it was traditionally a boys name I think it is a name the girls have definitely taken over.
