Pointing

I normally don't post a lot but since you all have children my sons age, I thought it would be a good place to ask. Is my son the only one still not pointing? The dr said he wasn't too worried until his 15 month appointment but I am worried since it's a red flag for autism. However he does say 10-15 words so that makes me feel a little better. Just curious, thanks!

Re: Pointing

  • Thank you for your reply! This makes me feel a little better. My concern isn't so much about the act of pointing but more about him showing me things. I'll say "Where is daddy" and he will reach his hand out, which to me is similar to pointing, but he never really shows me things. Hopefully he is just a little delayed. I need to stop reading google!

  • @BPaws, I didn't know you did that! I used to be the psychologist for the Early Autism Program at a private agency. Worked with babies from diagnosis to kindergarten. I wasn't aware of pointing as a red flag either. I know my pedi said pointing is a 15 month skill, but I don't remember any of the little ones I worked with not pointing necessarily. I wouldn't worry too much yet though; your LO might not be pointing today, but once they start a new skill they are unstoppable. There is a wide range of "normal" development.

  • It's funny because I never knew it was a red flag either. I used to work for Head Start and it was never part of our assessments or our red flag questions. My pedi asked if he could point at his 12 month apt and since he couldn't I went home and googled it and have been since. It seems to be a red flag though on several reputable web sites. Anyway, the fact that both of you are familiar with autism and not too concerned makes me feel a lot better.

  • Keep an eye on it but like blue pointed toast said, what your lo isn't doing today could start so quickly. You still have time until 15 months. Don't worry mama :-)

  • Charlotte doesn't point, but she gestures to things with an open hand.  Also, if we ask where something is ("Where is the kitty?") she will look and then walk to that person or item.

I'm not sure they have the physical dexterity to actually point with one finger.
  • Thanks for the replies!
