Do you think formal maternity pictures are weird?

We are taking our maternity pictures in 2 weeks. I'm not a fan of the half-naked pictures. I don't want any of my bare stomach or anything. I guess kind of like engagement pictures but showing off the bump. I'm not a fan of really casual pictures, though. I don't want to spend all this money on pictures just to wear the same jeans I wear all the time. So would it be weird if we got dressed up for them? I don't know what DH would wear, but I was thinking a dress like one of these:

or

I guess I just keep picturing DH in a suit and it looking like a bad prom photo shoot. But he wouldn't wear a suit. Maybe like a dress shirt with no tie? I don't know.

Also, would it be weird to wear a black dress like the one I linked? Usually people wear really bright and cheery colors.

The pictures will be in a studio since we are taking them in the middle of December.

Be honest, you're not going to hurt my feelings. TIA.

  • I don't think that's a bad idea but I wouldn't suggest wearing black since it doesn't usually show the bump well :)

  • I don't think it's a bad idea. It wouldn't be weird to wear a black dress but you may won't to maybe take something else too and change to show off the bump a little more (since that is the point of maternity pics) I wore a clingy orange cowel neck sweater dress and looked like a huge pumpkin (with giant boobs) D; Now I wish I had wore my little black maternity dress!
  • I also don't think black would be the best choice, and I am not wild on the pink dress personally, but I don't think being at least a little dressed up is weird. Here is one of our Christmas pictures:

  • We can bring an outfit change, so we might try to do one in like, cocktail attire and one in everyday clothes. Just to be safe. We only get one shot at them since it's not like we can try again in a couple months, so I'm really worried they won't look good.
  • We did formal as well this year. They were maternity/family xmas pics. Here they are if want to get an idea:

I didn't do any bare bellies or anything really having to do with Leilani. A few.

Lots of cute choices that you could dress up or down, many in the same price range as the pink dress.

You can get dressed up without being too formal if you want.  I definitely wouldn't wear all black.  You could wear some sort of a dress, and DH could wear something nice, but it doesn't have to be a suit.

  • I like the black, but they're right it doesn't show the bump well, with the right lighting it can though, I wore and black top and and charcoal long sweater, and that helped, if you want to do black, try putting either a red belt above your bump, or something that'll pop, give you some color, and then make sure he's wearing a different color shirt, that way the black doesn't blend together. I would take a change of clothes and some props, just to have more of a variety. Good luck!

  • If you're going to display them in frames and whatnot, I would opt for nice clothing like you said. I like the pink dress and have your DH wear a collar shirt. Take some other options just in case you have the opportunity to change.

I really dislike naked maternity photos too. There is really nothing about my fat pregnant body that I want to remember.

  • my friend didn't really do anything that had a bare belly, at least not in focus, but she did have some where she had on a tight tank top under a button up shirt that was open over the belly, I thought that looked really nice and showed off the bump while still being modest.

I liked the pink one, I personally wouldn't do black since that'd minimize the bump, but that's just me.

  • As a photographer I would be over the moon if one of my clients would wear something like either of these dresses.  I work only outdoors, but the black one would be my favorite for a studio shoot.  As for the pink, I would love to do something on the vintage side with your DH in khaki or grey dress pants, white shirt and suspenders and/or a bow tie...although, I know a lot of guys are not into that.  I think a suit would end up looking like a bad prom shoot though.  Dressy with no tie would work for sure.  The main thing I tell people is to just make it personal and comfortable to who you guys are.

  • oh and may I suggest some fun colored shoes to go with the black dress.  A pop of color is always great!

  • I love the first dress!! Its beautiful!:) but black probably wouldn't be the best color because of its slimming factor. Lol its all about being huge for once now hahaha
  • I was just talking to dh about doing one of our outfit changes in formal attire. I have this flowy black shift dress that I want to wear some stilettos in and I envision him with black pants/shoes, white button-up and either suspenders or a bowtie.  I hope that the photographer makes those pictures in like black and white or something.  We can have  multiple outfit changes so I am also doing the traditional informal photos as well, but I wanted something classy and different from everything that's on pinterest lol
