sick kid vent

I really hate that my 1st thought when my kids are sick is who's going to take off.  I wish it was always me and I wish there was no added stress of calling out or asking someone else to do it.  DD's 1st 2 years she was at a babysitter and was never sick, then I had DS and they went to daycare and he was sick w/ ear infections about 3 times last year, her once. I had used all my sick days and had 3 personal.  The kids just went back after being home with me for the summer.  DS was out last week with a fever and DD's got a fever tonight.  I get 15 sick days and 2 personal.  I was planning on using 1 for Halloween, I like to take off their birthdays and other fun things.  Atleast this year I have some sick days again to take, but I really hate doing it or doing it too often.  I'm a teacher so I feel very guilty calling out and hate coming back to what could be a classroom in a total mess.  We're very lucky to have 4 grandparents that help out, but they all work and I hate asking them to take time off.

I get it. I'd rather use my sick days for fun like Halloween and Bdays then an actual illness. I'm comforted knowing the kids are building up their immunities, hoping the school ages illnesses are less frequent. Hope your LO is 100% tmrw morning and she can go to DC.

  • I understand, it is really hard to juggle work and home especially when kids are sick. But, I would like to point out that you are very fortunate to have as much time off as you do. As you said, you were just home all summer with them, and 15 sick days is extensive, I can't imagine you would need that many each year. I get zero sick days and it is frowned upon when I take time off. I also have no family to help. It is me and DH...

Although I feel awkward asking, I do appreciate how much help we get.  I'm also glad this year I have my 15 sick days and they weren't used for maternity leave, but it's also like you where it's frowned upon to actually use them.  Our union fought and I think it went from 6 to 8 days we can take off without being considered unsatisfactory.
  • I understand. This seriously stresses me out too.
  • I totally get it. The is my son first year in a dayhome. I stayed home with for the first year and he was sick very briefly once. Since he has been in childcare since March he has been sick probably about 5-6 times. I get 10 sick days and my hubby 3 sick days and of course both of the companies prefer you don't take them which we never did prior to having a kid. I just hope it gets better after the first year like everyone tells me it will.

  • It doesn't bother me when people use their sick days for other things. It's built into a salary, so if they feel comfortable doing it, it's their decision. That being said, the closest I've come to using a sick day for 'fun' stuff is when I've decided I wanted to sleep more than I wanted to work.

It does bother me when people use all their sick days, presumably for 'fun' things, and then come to work when they really are sick because they don't have any sick days left. If you need more than the allotted sick days, you better either have kids/family members you're taking care of or a serious health problem.
