3rd Trimester

My MIL on knowing when baby will come

I was really desperate for babysitting so as a last resort I asked my Mil to play with DS1 today.
I chatted with her and asked if she knew that DH was scheduled to be out of town for training the last week of Oct. (Est. due date's 11/11.)
She said that doctors are pretty good at predicting when the baby comes because they can check if you're 2cm, etc. I may have stared in disbelief and rolled my eyes. I tried to enlighten her that no one can predict exactly when baby will come and that you could be 2cm for weeks, or suddenly start progressing rapidly after leaving the doctor's office. But since her OB was pretty accurate with her kids, she's convinced that the doctor should know.
Geez. This is the main thing I'm not looking forward to after baby arrives- having to have more encounters with my MIL. :-(

  • I am in the same boat.  My MIL seems to think "well have a better idea" soon of when the baby will arrive...but I'm not even 30 weeks pregnant yet. I keep trying to explain to her, unless there is an issue, we aren't going to know anything more when I'm 30 weeks than we did when I was 20 weeks. Gotta love in-laws!

  • Sorry hon. I don't think it was that obvious but I most definitely did a double take there when she tried to tell me that my doctor should know when the baby will arrive.
I was already slightly miffed that Dh went out with Mil and Ds1. A bag was packed with snacks and diapers. I changed him just before I left. No snacks were given and "lunch" was several hours late. Ds is now napping through dinner and my husband will likely pull a Houdini when he's cranky. Oh, and no diaper changes in over 5 hours. No sippy given with lunch. Aren't those basic things? Must I really spell everything out??

  • I don't think her response is that bad. I've heard a million people have ridiculous opinions about pregnancy and birth. I can't be bothered to be offended by all of them. And honestly, if this was all my MIL had to say to me in regards to baby, I would be happy as a clam.

Not that bad. It wasn't a vent, but rather something amusing.

This is some correlation between dilation and onset of labor.  It's not a perfect correlation, but it usually has some predictive value for many.  It sounds like you and MIL don't get along in general and minor comments like that probably feel like much bigger offenses than they really are .
