Question - WWYD

I know I don't post often but I wanted to see what bump mamas would do.

Our friends are having a Barbeque today. They recently moved into town. They have a two year old.

The mom tells us yesterday that the 2 year old has had a runny nose this week. She believes it is due to teething but would understand if we chose not to come with our LO.  My DH and I want to call soon to see if she has any symptoms still and then make our decision. My instinct tells me no but I'm not sure if I am just being a nervous nelly. LO has not been sick yet (knock on wood) and I would hate for that to happen. My husband thinks we can keep the two year old away from him but I know her too well. Hehe

Would you go with LO?

Re: Question - WWYD

  • As much as I love a good barbecue, id skip it.. I'd feel terrible if LO got sick and it was avoidable :-/

  • Yes, but I have a 2 yo. My 2 yo would not get close enough to another person's NB to get them sick because I wouldn't let him. However, he might get you or DH sick and then you could pass it on. Assuming no other symptoms, frequent hand washing and babywearing, I'd go and have fun.

  • I would go. I went to a wedding when LO was 3 weeks old, she got a cold, and she is still getting over it almost two weeks later. And it sucked. But, i know that i can't shelter her forever. She's going to come in contact with germs eventually. And realistically, we can't not do things, just because we have a baby. I would go crazy, and i would end up missing a lot, and probabky end up feeling depressed if I didn't go out and do things. I say, keep your LO close, and limit the contact others have with him, and have a good time.

  • I'd go. That toddler won't be anywhere near your newborn to pass on germs.
  • I'd go. It could be allergies or teething. Then again I have a toddler

  • Can you baby wear while you are there? Or keep her in her carseat covered up? I would go. You can't stayed holed up in the house for fear that LO may get sick. Just take extra precautions.

  • I'd go. Some things are out of your control. You can't possibly to expect LO never to be around germs.
  • Baby wearing and hand washing should do the trick. Hope you have fun! It was thoughtful of your fried to give you the heads up.
  • I'd go. Just keep LO away from the 2 year old.

  • I'd go. No fever, rashes, etc the toddler is likely fine. It's getting cooler so it may be weather related runny nose. Who knows.
  • I'll be in the minority and say I wouldn't go.  I am not planning on being super neurotic long term, but I am trying to limit exposure to germs in the first two months, when my LO's immunities are still pretty low...

  • I would go. LO and I go out quite often and I'm completely comfortable with not allowing anyone around him (I usually wear him).

  • I will be the other who says I wouldn't go.

My family and I just got over the plague and it sucked. Frankly, I'm not at all a germaphobe or over protective, but between endless amounts of Nose Frieda and saline drops for both my toddler and my LO - I'm going to steer clear of the snot factories for a few weeks. We were all miserable. Mama needs a break.

We think it was just allergies. We went, took the ergo carrier, and stressed hand washing for all just in case. Thank you for the answers ladies.
