Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Should I supplement?

I have been Bfing only while at home. And when I'm gone they use the milk I pump and supplement some with formula as I don't produce enough. We have cut back on some nursing sessions at home because she just wasn't asking for it. She never really has because I scheduled her from the beginning. A mistake I made that I believe effected my supply. Anyhow, I am gone 3 days a week as I work as a flight attendant. I'm pumping around 15 ounces a day. I pump as many times as she nurses. I'm glad that I've been able to cut some sessions as pumping 8 times in a 24 hour period was really getting old. However, I'm worried that my LO is only getting around 15 ozs of milk a day when I'm home. I know pumping isn't an exact indication of supply, but I can't imagine she can get much more out of me. At 10 almost 11 months should I be supplementing while I'm at home? We've done BLW and she's a fantastic eater except for the proteins. She's been spitting some out sometimes. She's chunky and happy, but I worry that she's not getting the fat her brain needs or perhaps the proteins she needs. How much should she be getting at this point if she is eating 3 meals a day?

Re: Should I supplement?

  • No. At this late in the game she's moving towards a year and will need more food and less milk then anyway. There's no point (or reason I can see from your post) to supplement. Focus on giving fat rich/protein rich foods: avocado, cheeses, eggs, yogurt.

  • Agree with PP's.  If you supplement now, her digestive tract will have to adjust to formula, and then in another month, she'll likely move to cow's milk (if you're doing that).  It's too much adjusting for no reason.  Focus on the protein foods listed above and give her as much breast milk as possible.  I see she's almost 11 months - if you're worried about fats, maybe think about starting whole milk a little early.
