For those of you who have created a registry...

I know it's really early on but I'm a big planner so I'm contemplating starting a registry just so I can keep organized.  Is there a way to keep the registry hidden so that other people can't find it?  I don't want someone to stumble upon it and find out about my pregnancy prematurely.  If all else fails, I suppose I could create a hidden "Baby Wishlist" board on Pinterest but that seems like it would end up being double the work.  How do the rest of you keep track of the products you're interested in?

  • You can do an Amazon wishlist instead of starting an actual registry.  I wouldn't suggest starting a registry yet.

I dunno, I plan to make one at Babies 'R' Us before the Nov 15 deadline, because of the offer they have going on right now. I've just been too lazy to research what I want on it.

  • I wonder if you can create it in a different name to hide it, and then change your name over and still get the BRU special promo thing? I might start one and just put a few obvious basics on there like onesies, and then really build it up when I'm ready.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Can you make the registry under a pseudonym and change it later?

  • Is there some kind of surreptitious search engine optimization push of individuals' online baby registries that I'm not aware of? I still don't understand why people would be finding it. I really can't think of a single person that I know who is thinking to themselves "I wonder what would happen if I type pandadair's name into the registry search at BRU."

I didn't realize BRU was doing an offer.  What is the offer?  Not that I'll be doing a registry since this is baby #2 but I have some preg friends.

  • If you google someone's name and the word "registry," you can find lots of info.  I don't think anyone would be looking for a baby registry specifically but my husband and I were married recently so someone might be looking up our wedding registry and come across a baby one in the process.

  • I used BabyList for my registry. You can add items from any site on the Internet, and it's fairly obscure so I don't think anyone would stumble upon it.

  • What if you used a fake first or last name for now? I'm sure if you ask BRU, they would be able to help you with it as I'm sure other people do it.
  • I created one early with DD and just used my first and middle name instead of first and last (so I used my middle name as my last name).  Then when I was further along and people actually needed to find it, I just went online and changed my name.  It was easy.

this is what their site says:
"For the first time ever, you can get
up to $200 for purchases made from
    your registry. Simply create your
    Baby Registry between Sept. 16
    and Nov. 15

  • Those are all great tips. I'm currently just keeping track of items I want and where I can get the best deal with a secret Pinterest board. I like that I can choose things from all over the web and link directly to the item. I'm noting the prices as I go, too. I'll have to look into BabyList, since I like not being limited to one or two stores.
  • I used a private Amazon wishlist for baby stuff prior to registering at BBB. Then I didn't have to worry about getting crap in the mail, which would have been awful after having a m/c the first time around. I changed my mind a lot between when I started the wishlist and when I actually registered, too. But it's a great way to keep track of the things you hear people recommend, and you can read all the reviews on Amazon (huge perk versus baby stores when you are comparison shopping for stuff like a car seat or stroller). I have a private Amazon wishlist for this baby even though we don't need much. I will also make a registry on Amazon even though we aren't having a shower because you still get the 10% completion discount.

That makes sense if you've just gotten married, I guess. It's just never occurred to me to google someone's name + registry. Of course I just tried it on myself and nada. I'm so boring, I can't even dig up my own dirt.

  • @raeg13 What MrsT2008 said. If you register before Nov 15, you get 10% back of anything purchased off your registry in the form of a gift card (up to $200).
    image

  • A friend of mine's sister changed her name on the registry to keep her from spying on what was bought. Not sure how to do it, but it can be done.

Don't you get a completion coupon anyway? I did with Amazon. No deal necessary.

  • Ziegeficker I believe so, but this is different. It's not 10% off of whatever is left on your registry that you buy later, it's a free gift card whose balance reflects 10% of whatever was purchased off your registry. So if, say, between your showers people buy $500 worth of stuff from your BRU registry, then you'll receive a $50 gift card. Unless I'm totally reading it wrong.

  • I started a registry to keep track of things we would like as we come across them.  Unless someone is specifically stalking you then I have no clue how someone would accidentally find your baby registry.  It's not like I head to Babies-R-Us website or store on a weekly basis and type in my friend's name to see who has a baby registry.

I also think there is nothing wrong with having a registry for your 2nd, 3rd, 4th + child.  Having a registry doesn't mean you are asking people for gifts.  There is nothing wrong with putting some bigger items you want on a registry so you can use the completion coupon when buying them.  Why not save yourself some money, right!

I definitely don't think anyone is stalking me.  It's just that I got married recently and I know some people may still be looking up my wedding registry.  Since I have an unusual name if you google my name and "registry" everything shows up and I don't want someone to find a baby registry while trying to find our wedding registry!!

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.  I'm probably going to go the Amazon wishlist route for now.

  • Unless your friends are like mine you're probably ok just having one up there. My one friend offhandedly made a comment over a year ago "I bet you already have a registry" so I went into the registry that I denied having and changed my name. I've been a babysitter/nanny for so long and whenever I saw something neat I'd add it to my registry so I wouldn't forget. All I need now are gender specific type things.

  • I've always created store registries in the past, but probably will just use a Pinterest board this time. I like to have a list to work from and occasionally someone will ask what we need and my poor pregnant brain can't remember.
It is unlikely that someone is going to stumble across your registry unless you maybe have a sister also registered. But by registering this early most likely your gear patterns will be discontinued by the time people are shopping for your shower. January is a HUGE month for baby specials, I'd wait until then to start an official registry.
  • Although it has been a while, I feel like when you create it (I am thinking it was BRU) there is an option to leave it private...or something where "only people with this link can see."

  • I would second babylist, it's pretty obscure so I doubt anyone would stumble upon it and the link to your registry is simple so when you're ready for people to see it, no problems! Plus I love that you can add things from any site you want and it doesn't have to all come from the same place.

  • I created a Target registry and they have an option to keep the registry private so that only people who you send your registry link to can see it. I started mine early too bc I always have trouble figuring out what to put on a registry.

Now excuse me while I go check out BRU bc that sounds like too good of a deal to pass up!

You can actually make a baby registry on amazon and make it private until you're ready to go public. You don't even have to bother with the wishlist. The other nice thing about amazon registries is you can add items from other sites to it if Amazon doesn't have what you're looking for.

Hmmmm this is our 2nd and obviously we won't have a shower, but I'm tempted to make a registry so grandparents can purchase off of it for Christmas, etc and I can get this deal. Tempting.
  • What offer??
  • pandadair said:

Are people you know in the habit of going on baby registries and typing in your name just to see? I don't understand how people would stumble upon it otherwise.

BRU only needs a last name for searches. In 2012 (the year of the baby in my husband's family, apparently) I typed in our last name looking for his cousin because her shower was coming up. Found her name and another cousin of his that had not yet announced she was expecting. So, unintentional but it did happen.

BRU has a deal going on where if you create a registry with them by Nov. 15th they will send you a gift card for 10% of everything that was bought off the registry. (Up to $200)
  • I have one on baby list. You can set it up in a different name or that you need a password to look at it. I think it is great because you can add items from anywhere on the web. Plus they let you have more than one list if you want to (all free)
  • @ Sammy.k - I think this is a great idea. I feel like people always ask, what do you need? With a registry they will know exactly what you're looking for.
  • We went to buy buy baby on Sat to look at their strollers (its an hour away and I had narrowed my choices down to three and wanted to see them in person) and they told us we could create a registry and not make it public until we were ready to. We didn't make one there, again cause it's so far away, but I went home and added the stroller I wanted to my amazon wish list. I'll move them from the wish list to an amazon registry in about a month. I had forgotten about BRU's promo going on, I'm going to go and register the day after our gender reveal on 11/2!
  • Can't you just create a BRU registry before nov 15th but not put anything on it? Also by nov I think that's far enough along to start a registry? I heard 14 weeks or so is normal? Or am I wrong
  • I just made a list in word.  I read lucie's list like it was the bible and then used the baby bargains book to make final decisions.  That book was a huge help when it came to picking out nursery furniture.
