experienced moms please help!!!

first alittle background info our daughter kali was born on sept 6th she has no known health issues and has done great so far .She is exclusively breastfed however i have been pumping and giving her the milk in a bottle more than latching her to my breasts. for the last nights in a row she has been waking up at around 10 pm and crying nearly inconsolably..we try everything to get her to calm down and go back to sleep but she just wont do it! This goes on for hours and hours when its particularly bad and it usually is she stays up till close to 6am crying and moving her arms and legs like shes in pain. :( My husband and i feel so bad for her we dont know whats wrong or how to help her and we feel like were doing something wrong this is our first child. she has always had gas since she was born and she gets hiccups after she eats most of the time and when she is having her crying fits she acts like they bother her too... should we call her dr? does this sound like just bad gas maybe? she has no fever. maybe all this is normal for a 3 week old? do you ladies have any tips or tricks we can try to make her feel better and calm down too sleep? thanks in advance my poor husband stays up with me to try and console her (he is such a great dad) but has to work at 8 so he gets like no sleep we end up napping at 5 when he gets home but would love to be able to sleep alittle at night again.

  • It sounds like she might be colic. I don't think there is much you can do to calm a baby with colic though, sorry.

  • My son (2 weeks old) does that almost every night between 8pm-11pm. He kicks his legs terribly so we tried gas drops as recommended by our pediatrician. It worked! He calms down immediately and falls asleep. Pedi said babies cannot overdose on it, cannot become dependent on it, and can handle it as often as we feel we need to give it to him. I've given it to him on 4 different occasions when it gets really bad. Try that?

  • Maybe she needs a good burp or maybe its reflux.
  • since you are breastfeeding, it could be something in your diet. i had this problem with my first ds. turns out it was the prenatal vitamins that was giving him really painful gas. my ob told me to continue to take my vitamins after i delivered because i was breastfeeding. i asked the ped about it and he said it was something in my diet but couldn't say exactly what. i systematically cut out "fuss foods."  Once I stopped the vitamins, it got a lot better. It took a few more days for vitamins to be completely out of my system, but once they were no more crying.

it could also be acid reflux or something else. so it is worth mentioning to pediatrician. hope you find a solution soon. i know it is hard to listen to your baby cry that hard and feel helpless to do anything about it.
  • It sounds like colic to me. I would definitely talk to your pediatrician, but there are a few other things you can do. In addition to the gas drops, I would look into your diet since she's exclusively breast fed. Cut out anyting acidic like tomatos, spicy foods etc. I would try eating a very bland diet and then slowly add foods back in to see if a certain thing is causing it. When she's fussy, you can also try holding her face down over your arm close to your body. That tends to relax my son and help his belly. Good Luck!

  • That does sound like colic or some type of food sensitivity. DD had this and the pedi suggested gripe water and probiotics. She said there was a theory that colic was caused by difficulty digesting the milk because of the lack of good bacteria in the intestines. DD was formula fed so we changed the formula, gave her probiotic drops and used Colic Calm when she had tummy aches. Once we did that she started STTN at 5weeks. Hope you find relief soon.

  • If its truly colic then it isn't reflux or a food allergy. Colic is unexplained crying and fussiness. Check out Happiest Baby on the Block. There are a few YouTube videos on the subject. The five S's are worth a shot.

I agree with PP's, it is worth a try if you want to call the dr. or try something for gas, but sounds like colic. Try the 5 S's for sure. My son did not have colic but experienced bad crying between 6-8 weeks and shushing, swaddling and rocking were the only things that helped a bit. Oh and wearing him, do you have a carrier? Check out this info on the purple cry too: https://www.purplecrying.info/

  • I see it says you have been pumping and bottle feeding. Do you bottle feed the breast milk more than nursing? If so, maybe it could be from the bottle. I had bottle fed ds my breast milk for a while before we switched to formula. He ended up crying a lot, so we switched to the Dr.Brown bottles. Since doing that ds has been a whole different baby.

I agree with the others though. It could be reflux or colic. Maybe give the pedi a call and see what they recommend.

    Good luck!
  • You are getting a lot of good advice and things to try.

My daughter was colicky as some folks have suggested yours might be. We did 2 things a product called "Colief" which is basically lactase enzyme drops which help her digest your milk or formula, and we got her on probiotics.

This cut the crying from like 5 hours a day to 35 minutes.

Please feel free to PM me if you have questions as I don't usually come over here much.

People say there is nothing you can do for colic, but there is A LOT of evidence to the contrary.

  • Our baby was doing the same thing. We were giving him has drops several times per day. Our pedi suggested I eliminate dairy from my diet as many babies can't digest it. 3 weeks later we have given him drops 2 times total. It really helped.
  • Lots of good suggestions. Also, try nursing if you aren't having difficulties with latching in the evenings because swallow less air when on the breast than a bottle and are less gassy that way and the connection with you (especially skin to skin) might help soothe her a bit.

  • Ditto on more nursing. Does lo eat more if offered? Maybe a growth spurt. I would nurse more and lay off bottle. She could be getting too much air or is still hungry

  • It could be something you are eating. Have you tried gripe water?
  • Gripe water is amazing (which is gas drops). If it does wind up being colic then I have heard bouncing on an exercise ball while holding baby helps too. Also look at what you are eating. With my son I couldn't have caffeine other wise he would get gas real bad and with my daughter it is some spices that get her gassy.  Hopefully its not something you are eating since its hard to give up a good food :o)  good luck
  • Sounds like my baby. She was diagnosed with "silent reflux" and prescribed zantac. She's been better ever since.
