1st Trimester

Tell me I'm not the only one who didnt know about the no soft serve while preggo rule!

So I went to my town's fall festival today with my best friend and her baby. I went off and got some soft serve (which I HATE usually but was craving...), when I went back to the area we were sitting (about half with through my ice cream mind you..) she looks at me and says, "What are you doing? Your not supposed to eat soft serve when your pregnant!" Ummm.. WHAT?! I just had a doctor's apt. on Thursday and he rambled off the entire list of do's and dont's and at NO time did I hear, don't eat soft serve. Of course, I google it and now I'm freaked out a little. It says the chances of getting whatever disease that the machines can carry is low, but you would think the doctor would have mentioned that. Please, tell me I'm not alone in this craziness! I guess I should just live in a bubble for the next 9 months.

  • I ate soft serve, there are lots of things that are on the no no list that I ate.

    Moderation is key

  • I just asked this at my informational meeting with the nurse and was told soft serve was fine as long as it was from a decent place.

There has been more listeria outbreaks from peanut butter and bagged salad/spinach. As long as it is from a reputable place, I would enjoy the ice cream.

I have yet to see this mentioned ever in a listing of outbreaks. And I have looked that stuff up back to the early 80s when the soft cheese outbreak went down.
..I think she was thinking about salmonella. that was on both of those items..

  • There were recalls in 2012 for both spinach and peanut butter due to Listeria.

Google "peanut butter listeria" and "spinach listeria". I'd link you but I'm mobile.

  • When my mom was fighting cancer soft serve was off limits.  My doctor says it's fine as long as it's from a good place.

  • I feel like every food has a reason as to why you can't eat it while pregnant. I will only not eat the things that are REAL no nos. soft serve, I will eat it and eat it with a smile. Moderation is key....I'm sure it would only be dangerous if you ate it several times a day your whole pregnancy.
  • Just eat seriously.  I can barely can stomach anything.  If I could eat soft serve without puking, I'd be friggan eating it.

  • I know about it. Just like I know about the "rules" against cold cuts, undercooked meat, and raw eggs. Yet I still enjoy cold sandwiches from Subway, medium steak, and cookie dough.

It's a calculated risk. And if you take the time to look up the studies and stats, you'll find that the risk is really pretty low. You're far more likely to catch a foodborne illness from a salad bar or buffet than from some froyo or cookie dough.

  • I think that during pregnancy, you have to make your own choices. There are the obvious ones that are bad for you, drinking, smoking, taking ibuprofen, ect. But when it comes to food, be smart. Don't eat tuna or other high mercury fish every day but once in a while is usually fine.

I personally choose to eat a mainly whole food diet, and when I get a craving I indulge with out worry because 99% of what I eat is good for me.
Last pregnancy, I lived on subway, because with morning sickness that was all that was appealing and I could keep down.

Moderation is like others said the key. Humans like to view things in extremes, but when you compare the likelihood of getting listeria or some other food bore illness to say getting hit by a car while walking down the road, it can help put it in perspective. I'm still more likely to get hit by a car than to get a food borne illness from alot of the foods listed in the thread.

Also if in doubt, call your OB/ Midwife, that's what they are there for, to answer questions and deal with concerns.
  • I avoided nearly everything I was supposed to (I only had caffeine and well under the daily amount) and my son was born extremely early and very sick. Not trying to scare you; things can happen regardless so be smart and don't stress over the small stuff.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I actually laughed out loud when I read that soft serve was off limits.  You've got to be kidding me.

Did anyone else read the Wall Street Journal article about taking back your pregnancy?  It was in an August weekend issue and it was written by an economist that looked at the major no-nos of pregnancy and reviewed the statistics that go with them.  Some very surprising information.  And it makes a lot of people look like fear-mongers.

  • Relax. Listen to your doctor, not your friend

OMG, eat your damn soft serve ice cream and enjoy it!

Edited to add: I swear before you know it a pregnant women isn't going to be able to eat a single damn thing!  I 100% agree with @mj.reilly!  It is getting out of control and people need to remember something called common sense!

  • Never heard that.  I ate soft serve and froyo numerous times while I was pregnant with DS...  My doc said I could basically eat anything I wanted, but in moderation... I also ate sushi several times... GASP!  LOL!

     image

  • I've had sushi too. The reason for no sushi is only because if you were to get someone internal bacteria they wouldn't be able to treat it. Yes that is still reason not to eat it, but moderation will keep your chances lower. And I've never even heard this soft serve rule. So I will still have my soft serve.

    It's a BOY
