How do you keep bath toys clean???

We've tried baskets. We've tried nets. We've tried shelves. But our bath toys still get mildewy. The foam letters, the plastic toys, it all gets mildewy. What am I doing wrong?

  • We use a basket and a net, and honestly.. I replace them once in a while. Especially the ones that water can go into, because even when I squirt all the water out after bathtime it leaves some and can get mildew.

  • I HATE bath toys. And I HATE bath toys that have holes all in them for water. I know the point is to "squirt" and have fun in the bath, but they get so nasty.  I honestly just replace when they get gross.  Thankfully, we aren't into bath toys so much at 7 now. Sometimes she takes a Barbie in or two and plays an imagination game.. but those little bath toys are no longer used.  When she was little, though, she always used so many.   You can try taking them out of tub after done and washing them in dish soap.. then dry them.  I found that kept them clean a little longer.  But still, after time I think they get gross no matter what.

  • After struggling with mildew and general grossness, I've switched to only having bath toys that are hard plastic and easy to clean (most are actually dish washer safe). We have two set of Little People bath sets (a stacking boat, and a jungle slide), some stacking cups, and a set that are supposed to be beach toys. It's working well!

  • I just always rotated them...she also was happier with a wooden spoon and some tupperware with bubbles than true bath toys, so I didn't buy many.
  • I soak mine in a little bleach once they get gross. If that doesn't work I throw them away.

  • We don't use bubble bath, that might make a difference (if the soap doesn't get rinsed off really well?). I have tossed squirter toys also, they grow black mold on the inside. The foam letters have held up well, in all honesty. And they primarily play with old yogurt containers and plastic bottles also.

I've never ever used bubble bath with DD, so that isn't why for us!

  • We just use her molded plastic toys---animals, LP, plastic figurine sets, Minnie dress up stuff---things that we use often so that she always wants them out of the tub--so they dry off really well. And they aren't IN the bathroom with all the moisture. She rotates toys to take in the shower, so not every toy is in there all the time.

We don't buy squirt toys. We replace the alphabet letters often. We also just use cups and things like that as well.

  • So, I only scanned the responses.  I keep them in a mesh laundry bag hanging on a command hook in the shower.  You can take the whole bag and toss it in the washing machine every so often.  We don't have toys with holes in the bottom anymore because, ew.

  • Thanks, y'all. Glad to know my house isn't Ground Zero for mold. We don't have any squirters for that reason, but I guess I didn't expect the foam things to be such a problem. I'm going to try the mesh bag and slowly moving towards plastic toys instead of this foam crap.
