Multiples

First detection??!

I am just curious for those whom have had or are having multiples. At what stage in your pregnancy were they detected? Was it during your first u/s? Just curious if you can have your first u/s around the 8-10 week mark and multiples not be detected?

~~ Mom to an amazng 2 1/2 year old and expecting AGAIN =) ~~

Re: First detection??!

  • I had my first ultrasound at 20 weeks, which is when they were detected.

Most people having multiples will find them at a scan around 6-10 weeks. It's rare (but has happened) for the u/s tech to miss twins.

  • We did IVF so our first u/s was at 7 weeks and they were obvious at that point.

  • We did IVF but my first ultrasound was in an ER due to bleeding at 6 weeks 3 days.  At that point there was two sacs but only one heartbeat.  When we went in for our first "real" ultrasound at  6 weeks 6 days, there were two sacs and two heartbeats measuring within 2 days of each other.  I would doubt the tech would miss two 8-10 weeks but I suppose it's possible, though very rare with the technology now.

  • I found out at 5w5d - I would not expect that it is likely that they are often missed between 8-10 weeks.  I'm curious why you are asking this.....

  • It was very obvious for is at 6w 0d even though B was measuring behind and yolk sac wasn't clearly visible it was still noticeable there was more than just one in there. Follow up ultrasound the next week confirmed. Depends on type of twin though I think mono is more easily missed than di/di since it's one sac not two. I could be wrong on that though.

  • At 5w3 days we only saw one empty sac, then at 7w2d we saw and measured one baby, ultrasound was nearly done and oops, they swiped over a second baby. I could see how they could have easily missed the second baby had it not been swooped over as they were finishing up. Mine are di-di and not IVF.

  • Due to a previous miscarraige, I had bloodwork done around 6-7 weeks and my doctor highly suspected a multiples pregnancy based on my numers.  We then had our first ultrasound at 8 1/2 weeks and she was looking for two and easily found both of them!

  • We saw them both at 7w5d. That was our first ultrasound.

  • We had our first u/s at 7 weeks and that's when we found out. I think its possible for the tech to miss a twin during an u/s but its very rare.

  • We did IVF and saw two sacks and two heartbeats at six weeks exactly. Since we transferred two embryos, she was thorough in the u/s.

We found out at 7w and our midwife recognized it immediately. I was shocked that she could tell so quickly. They just looked like one blob to me. ;)

  • I'm one of the rare cases that had three early ultrasounds (5,6,8 weeks because of a prior mc) and didn't see the twins. I went into the ER with bleeding at 11 weeks and that is where I found out. The ultrasound machine in my OB's office was old though and because my girls were mono/di with the thinnest membrane and hiding behind each other they were difficult to see. Not at all common though.
  • I found out at my third ultrasound at seven weeks
After three miscarriages and one ectopic pregnancy we are currently pursuing adoption. " Born not from our flesh, but born in our heart. You were longed for and wanted and loved from the start."

  • My midwife did our first scan in her office at 10 weeks. Only saw 1. Found the 2nd baby at our 19 week ultrasound. I know I felt big, but this was baby 4, so I was going to pop out sooner right? Nope. It's twins! I thought it was rare also, but I've bumped into a few of us. Including a woman who conceived on clomid and they didn't see hers until 20 weeks.
  • 5w4d.... With heartbeats!
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • We saw both and their heartbeats at 6w4d.
  • At 12 weeks we went to hear the heartbeat via Doppler, not u/s. After thoroughly checking for two, only one was detected.

The following weeks at 13weeks, we saw two babies and two heartbeats on the u/s.

  • We did IVF, so our first u/s was at 6w5d.  We could clearly see the two sacs and two healthy heartbeats.

    This exactly.

  • We also were ivf, so our first u/s was at 5w5d. Saw them then, but was warned that b was a little behind and might not continue to grow. So far they've been wrong.
