Dutchie here

Hi you guys,

We found out 2 weeks ago that I'm pregnant and we're really excited. It's our first and it's all so new and overwhelming. It's so hard to collect all the foods that are and aren't safe since there's info all over the net and people antenatal necessarily agreeing. Anyone else finds this hard?
I hope it'll all turn out fine.
Hugs from the Netherlands!
Janne

Re: Dutchie here

  • Welcome and Congrats on the pregnancy.  There isn't a good one stop shop to find all the foods that you shouldn't eat.  I stay away from under-cooked meat, over-easy eggs, and unpasteurized cheese.  Those are my main ones.

  • Welcome and congrats!  My sister is married to a dutch man :)  Holland is gorgeous.

And I use my judgment for some of it (i.e. I still eat cold lunch meat and soft serve). You can ask your Dr. their opinion, too.

  • Welcome and congrats on your pregnancy!

After already being pregnant twice before, I've found that there really isn't a general concensus as to what you can/can't eat. And, typically, everything in moderation is a good mantra to remember. Just use your judgment. I generally just make sure that everything I eat is fully cooked (no raw meats, eggs, or fish) and make sure things are pasturized (cheeses, milk, certain juices).

  • Thanks for the warm welcome and helpful tips! I guess I do worry too much about doing something wrong. Our first appointment is in 3 days so until then I'll stop worrying and eat safe stuff ;)
Nice to meet you guys! Is nice to talk to other people about this before we an break the news! I'm so excited! :)

  • Congrats! I agree with PP, just make sure everything is fully cooked. Also some dr are stricter than others, I went by my dr's rules(although I cheated a few times with lunch meat and pepperoni).

  • Congrats! As far as good goes I have been much like pp's no unpasteurized cheeses or milks. I have been staying away from tuna and lunch meats.

  • While I follow the rules of no raw meats, unpasteurized cheeses, etc. I also especially like what WhitePicketFence said about everything in moderation.

Lately I've been loving roasted seaweed, but I've consciously chosen to not eat it more than once or twice per week out of fear that I just don't know all of things to avoid. While our bodies do a good job at processing things in small amounts, too much and too often of one thing might overwhelm the developing little one, especially now while all of the important organs are forming.

Anyway, congrats and welcome! It'd be so interesting to hear about any differences between how pregnancy is viewed, what is common during labor and delivery and how maternity leaves are different in different countries. Maybe that could be a post for later when we are further along. :)

  • Interesting, Sandy! If be very interested. Good Idea. The thing with the food is that I've been eating vegetarian and sometimes vegan for a while now and I eat as little processes and sugary foods as I can manage without having to give up the foods that I really love. This made me already kind of weary of the types of additives and such out there. Also I drink a lot of herbs teas instead of soda and it kind of startled me that there are soooo many teas that you should refrain from drinking that keeping and overview so kind of difficult. I think I'll keep to more conventional foods until my doctors appointment just to be safe. Thanks you guys.
