Parenting after a Loss

Signing mamas?

For those of you signing with your littles, what has been your experience? I feel like as soon as we have a breakthrough and DD will sign something all day long, she'll just REFUSE to do it again the next day. She's figured out "all done" and "more," but for the life of me I haven't been able to get her to do "more" in two days. She just points and whines and I feel badly, because usually it's over food and I don't want to NOT feed her but I also know she knows how to ask. Is this normal?

Re: Signing mamas?

  • Hugs, I'm no help with the signing, but we have similar issues with OJo's words.. He will say a word one day.. Say it allll day.. And then weeks will go by without us hearing it again.. And, all I get is the point and grunt.. And he wonders around babbling shaking his hands like I should know what he wants! Sigh!

  • It is normal. When she points at the food or whatever, I would just say "oh, you want more ___?" and sign "more" as you speak it, then reinforce it by giving her the food.  Don't fret. Even when they speak a word, you might not hear them say it again for a while.

This from a mama who uses sign language in the home every day and my 4 year old will use signs when he gets sick and loses his voice ;)

Thank you for this. I haven't known how to reinforce the sign, really, and wasn't sure if I was teaching her something else by giving in :D
