Transition from crib?

Were a long way from outgrowing the crib...but since my dad very nicely bought us one, I've been feeling a little guilty that we bed share. How long does a kid usually use a crib and what milestone do you wait for to move them?

Re: Transition from crib?

  • In our case, it was when she decided to start climbing out. Unfortunately, that was at 19ish months for us. If I had my way she would've stayed in it until at least 2!

  • With my cousins they were in a crib until they could climb out of it. Even then I think they were like 2 1/2 before moving to a bed (well.. it was a mattress on the floor at that time) lol.

  • It totally depends but I guess I would say when they start crawling out. That could be as young as 18 months. However, my niece is just moving to a "big girl bed" and she turned 2 in August.

  • I would use it as long as you can (I.e., they can't climb out, they are not sleep regressing due to crib, they can still fit comfortably, they aren't asking for a bed and you don't need the crib for a sibling). It is so much easier when they are contained in a crib as a toddler.

We moved my son when he was just over 2 because we needed the crib for the new baby. We were concerned he was too young and would be scared or would just get out and play (he would not have understood an explanation that he needed to stay in the bed at that age). But he did great! I have heard of other kids at that age having a tough time with it and needing to go back to the crib.

Each kid is different, and if they are on the younger side, it may involve trial and error.
  • Ds was almost 3. He loved his crib. Once we put him in a regular bed he started not sleeping as well.
  • DD will be 2 next week and is still in her crib. We are planning to move her to a big girl bed pretty soon, but I haven't rushed it because she is happy in her crib. If they start climbing out or trying to climb out frequently, it's time to make the switch.

  • We switched my DS about two months ago so he was a little over 2 1/2. I would've kept him in their longer but I was bed sharing with DD and wanted to transition her into the crib since she wasn't sleeping well. I would say most people move their LO's prior to or around 3 years old. My DS was perfectly happy in his crib and sleeping well. I only moved him because I needed the crib.

  • My DS was just shy of three. We moved him because we were switching him into a new bedroom to get the nursery ready for the baby. He could also climb out but would always climb back in so we didn't realize this was going on until we started finding toys in the crib in the morning that hadn't been there when we put him down for the night. Once we figured it out I just had an image of him hopping out, running around the room grabbing toys to throw back in and climbing back in himself thinking he was getting away with something. Silly boy.

  • Ava is still in a crib (she'll be 3 in December). She loves it and sleeps fantastically in there. Our ped said as long as she's happy and sleeping well, to leave her in there. All my friends with kids who have already switched to a big kid bed have problems with them being in and out all night. I'm not looking to borrow trouble ;)

  • He was in his bed until he turned three. We moved him to a toddler bed because we were expecting ds2 and I just couldn't lift him over the edge any more. He never tried to climb out though and was perfectly happy in the crib.
  • We moved DD1 out at 20 months because the crib was needed for DD2. She had never succeeded in escaping. She's been great in her big girl bed.
  • We've partially bed shared with all 3 girls. They all started/start the night in the crib and came into our bed at their first waking.

DD1 started climbing out at 22 months, which is when we moved her to a twin bed. We started transitioning DD2 to a twin bed around 2.5 years in preparation for DD3 needing the crib. I assume she will be in it until 2-3 years.
