Baby Finn (NICU, thank you, and more)

My baby boy, Finnley, was born 9/13. I went in to be induced and once they got me checked in and a heart rate monitor on me, they noticed his heart rate was 190 - 200. It was very unusual because due to being high risk I had NST scans twice a week and his resting heart rate was always 130-140s. My OB decided it was best to do a c-section. Finnley was born at 11:30 am, an 8 lb 14.9 oz beautiful baby boy. However, right after he was delivered his heart rate was 220-240. Finnley was born with an Atrial Flutter, and had to be shocked with 2 joules to get his heart back into rhythm. After I could feel my legs again, I was able to visit Finn in the NICU. After 11 days in the NICU in my city, the peds cardilogist called me to tell me that Finnley had a PDA (a ductus that did not close at birth) and narrowing of the aorta and he needed to be rushed to UVA. We spent another 6 days in their NICU until Finn finally got to come home. Finn still needs surgery to fix his heart, but he is doing much, much better and we are so happy to be home.

With that being said, I've spent 9 months on this board. Reading your stories and ups and downs, even sharing some of my own. Out of all of the things I was worried about happening after he was born, I could have never imagined this. I just want to thank you all for listening, and offering advice, and being here for me to read. Being a mom is truly an amazing gift that I never thought I would be able to experience.

Best Wishes & Love!

(also sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot)

  • Glad to hear that Finn is doing well and home. On a side note: you said UVA, I am from Charlottesville as well and was a pecs Icu nurse up to 6months ago. I have taken care of lots of babies who have had heart surgery and you are in great hands. Feel free to pm if you have questions.
  • Thanks for the reply! I was very pleased with the care he received at UVA :) They do great work there! I trust that his surgery will go smoothly and his recovery will be quick.
  • I have a little Finn too! Congratulations on your little man! I hope his recovery is quick and easy for him!
