My doctor gave me samples of Select-OB+DHA... I haven't taken them yet but wanted to check if anyone else has and also their opinion. If not which one do you recommend?
I chose the gummies because I'm a big baby about taking pills. But I noticed they don't have any calcium in them so I'm also taking a calcium supplement (yes, another gummy lol). I take one in the morning and one in the evening of each
I am taking Prenate Mini. Its smaller then others. It also has DHA. It has worked for me. Its a single pill. A few of the samples given to me were much bigger and had two pills for me to take on top of it.
Here's the vitamin regimen I've been on for several years (started about a year before TTC my son who is now 13 months, stayed on it for breastfeeding him, I plan to keep doing this until I'm done having kids and breastfeeding).
New Chapter Perfect Prenatal
- No dyes.
- No unfermented soy.
- No synthetic vitamins.
- Vitamin A is 100% from beta-carotene.
- Daily dose is split into 3 pills for better absorption and to be easier on the stomach.
- Contains probiotics for easy digestion.
- Not "horse-pill" sized, easy to swallow.
I also take:
Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA
- Recommended by the American Pregnancy Association.
- 450 mg of DHA
- Comes from small fish (anchovies and sardines), which don't store mercury like large carnivorous fish do. And they are more sustainable.
- Goes through molecular distillation to remove any heavy metals.
- Not "horse-pill" sized, easy to swallow.
And Vitamin D! I use the drops, Carson DDrops or Vitacost, 4000 IU dosage.
Half as likely to develop pregnancy-related high blood pressure / pre-eclampsia.
Less likely to give birth prematurely.
Less likely for both mother and baby to have insufficient Vitamin D levels.
There has also been some speculation linking Vitamin D deficiency and autism. Though the cause of autism is still unknown, I find this an interesting theory. A few articles on the subject:
Also, once you have baby and are breastfeeding, if you are taking ~5,000 IU of Vitamin D a day, that covers baby's requirements. (Else you should supplement baby with at least 400 IU a day.)
I take Vitafusion gummies. I like them because they taste pretty good and don't make me feel sick. My doctor said in general, all of the pre-natals are fine bc the main thing is the folic acid content, which will be in all of them (about 800 mg). I did just notice thanks to this discussion that the Vitafusion does not have calcium or iron. May want to start taking other supplements at the opposite end of the day or something!
What is onsale and does NOT have DHA (I can't take it).
I'm just curious, why can't you have DHA?
I am deathly allergic to fish/seafood. And studies on DHA (which is usually either fish or seaweed based) shows a contraindication to it.
I hated the fish ones, so I bought the target brand (up & up) dha and I think it's soy based...
The soy based ones tend to be the seaweed based ones. The only not "water" available form of DHA is from flax seed oil, and my Ob said not to supplement with it.
Interesting! I had no idea.

I take these as well. I take the vitafusion prenatal calcium/fiber gummies with them. At Walmart they are sold side by side. I asked the pharmacist about the iron issue. He told me wait until I have my blood work before adding an iron supplement. some women don't need it and if you take it it may cause constipation.
I've been taking GNC's prenatals, but they give me GAS. :-t If I take them on an empty stomach, I've more gas and cramping. Supposedly, the B12 is supposed to reduce the morning sickness, but that's so not true (for me). My hub did his research and I'm on my way to trying Prenatalgyn. It's expensive, but we found a website that offers it for $30/bottle. It was highly rated and it contains MORE vitamins than GNC. My fingers are crossed!! 8->
I take Baby and Me by Mega Foods, Nordic naturals Prenatal DHA, Metagenics omega 3, and Carlson 4000IU and Carlson Magnesium 2x200mg and PB8 probiotics for help with constipation (it works really well!) and now 100mg B6 for m/s divided. I was taking all of this before except extra B6 and just a different multi and so far no swallowing issues I just avoid taking pills at my Most vulnerable times of day to vomiting (before noon)
