Christmas for toddlers

Do any of you have any ideas for some great learning and discovery toys for Christmas? Or just some great toddler gifts in general?

I really like the looks of this:

Marble Race

And this:

Hammer away

I'd love some ideas and for some of you to tell me what was a hit at your house in Christmases past.

Re: Christmas for toddlers

  • When my neice was 1 and 2 (and I was a poor college student) I got her big boxes and put random items in it like plastic cups and plates, tissue paper, ribbon. Anything pretty and not a choking hazard. She LOVED it I'm not sure my sister loved that she would empty the box one item at a time and throw it around the room, the box of stuff was the most played with gift for well over a month.

  • I do not recommend marble race for kids 3 and under. We had that at the daycare I worked at in college and the 3 year olds couldn't assemble the pieces. They also didn't play with it, they preferred to take it apart and roll the marbles around loosing them in the process.

I recommend a ride on toy. The hammer toy looks awesome and like a good option too.

  • For James one year old Christmas, Santa brought him a slide and this musical ball and hammer set.

  • This is what our son got for his birthday and he loves it! There are different cars that can be purchased for about $7 a piece to push on here and there are different sets that can also be bought and connected together. The train can go around the track on it's own and the train station speaks in three different languages. He loves the tunnel and has figured out how to crank the cars to the top of the hill. He has also figured out how to push the other cars along the track and how to take the track apart. We are still working on putting it back together, but this toy is meant for children ages 1-5 years, so we think this will hold his interest for a long time, that and DH loves playing with it with him too. It's been a big hit!

  • I really want to get him a stand-up easel, so we can start doing some cool artsy projects. Plus I think we can find other uses for it when doing other activities.

  • My son has the marble race thing at his sitter's and they love it. They play with it quite a bit. My mom has a similar one but with cars that me and my sister bought from a garage sale.

I bought N a drum set for his birthday that came with 12 other instruments. He loves it! It isn't a stand up one so it doesn't take a lot of space.

For Christmas I think we will do books and probably mega blocks.

What drum set did you get? I've been looking for a good one, but I need something smaller...

DS got the ball and hammer set and he loves it! Santa is bringing these for Christmas this year, and I think I might be more excited than he could ever be!

This actually ended up being a huge hit for my 3 and 4 year old!  They absolutely loved it. I would definitely recommend having one :)

  • The things that were a big hit at our house:
Large Tonka Trucks to push (I probably have 10 easily that they ALL play with)
    Large Legos to build
Climbers for the back yard (like HMP posted)
Crayola art easel (was better when the kids were a couple years older.)
    Tonka/Mickey riding/push toy
Water baby (for DD's second Christmas when she was 1.5yrs old, she LOVED it.)
Step2 outdoor Grill or Step 2 Kitchen set (or any type of kitchen set)
    Anything musical
    Dolls
    Little People sets
We got the boys these super hero kid blankets when they were 1 and 2 yrs old and they turned out to be a huge hit, as well as these Transformer pillows that I just randomly bought one day because I thought they felt super soft.  The kids ended up cherishing them because they felt nice, they were colorful and fun.  So each year I get them a new type of blanket and pillow.
The Disney store has these large characters that are meant for toddlers and I think they are awesome!
    Hope these ideas help :)
