Weekend only retail?

Does anyone know of any stores that hire people for weekends only? DH and I need more than he's currently bringing in but he can't be home early enough for me to work an evening shift. Around here evenings shifts start at either 4 or 5 and it's a good night if he's home by 7. The cost of childcare for 3:30-7 would be more than I would early that day, so it's definitely not an option.

I've talked to Gap, Target, Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn and all have told me that if you can't work a single week day shift they can't hire me and that they can't guarantee me both weekend days.

Re: Weekend only retail?

  • High school summers and on holiday breaks from college I worked at Victorias Secret And would do nights. Come in at 8pm for inventory. Changing the floor plan. Introducing new items. Setting up for semi annual sale. Also Hallmark- DHs cousin does resets there and goes in at 8/9pm

  • Have you thought about waiting tables? Especially where you are, you could earn upwards of $20+ an hour. Much better than min wage or so. If you find a place open late, like 2am ish, their shifts would start around six ish in my experience.
  • Are there any green market type events in your area?  Around here there are a lot of green markets.  I always see vendors on FB asking for people to work at them, if they are doing multiple markets.  They pay cash usually...and the hours are roughly 8-2.  Just an idea...trying to think outside the box.

  • Hubby and I are TTC, and I work at Petco in the grooming salon in AK. We have the same plan as you pretty much, where I only work two days a week when the little one gets here, preferably weekends cause that's where the most money is. They work with my schedule really well so far, and a bonus is you make commission. But your guaranteed minimum wage for those slow days. So, as a basic bather, you can make $400+ a paycheck working hard, as a full groomer you can make a bit more than that. I know groomers who average $200 a day.
It's not for everyone, but it's working for me! Good luck!
  • Grocery stores and large hardware stores like Home Depot often have either late night shifts or weekend only options.

I know someone else mentioned waiting tables, that can be a good option if you're willing to do it.  Local breakfast joints often hire people for the busiest shifts which are typically Saturday and Sunday mornings.

  • Do you have a Sports Authority near you? When I worked there, we had a dad that worked his normal 8-5 job, went home for dinner, and came in from 7 to close (10:30ish), plus a full shift on the weekend. Around here, SA mostly employs college students and they are willing to work around pretty much any schedule. If all else fails, I'm sure almost any retailer will hire you in a month for seasonal work. They'll love that you want to work weekends.
  • Another thought, have you thought about looking into working for a gym with childcare?  Most of them offer free childcare for employees while they work.  When I was picking DD up from the Y after my workout one day they asked if I was interested in working there so I figured I'd give it a shot.  Right now I work 2 super short shifts a week, DD goes with me, I get a free membership for myself and I get half off all program activities.

  • Drugstore?  My H was a Rite Aid manager quite awhile ago and he just told me he definitely had only weekend people, and they were able to give them both days. He said a lot of the college kids were Saturday and Sunday.  They couldn't work during days or evenings (due to class/homework, etc) so wanted just weekends.  He had plenty in his store.

That said, it's gonna depend on the actual store and manager, and who is currently ON staff.  If they already have 5 people who ONLY want weekends, they may not have room for more and may only need other shifts.

  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies! Overnights won't work. I don't function without sleep and we would borrow money from my ILs before we would risk that. Plus Drew still nurses twice overnight and won't drink a bottle. I'm willing to force the solids/bottle thing during the day, but DH can't be up all night with a miserable baby and still go to work all day.

Waitressing would be great, but without experience they will only hire me if I can day daytime breakfast or lunch shifts (have tried that on and off for a few years; there's far more people interested than jobs available around here).

I will talk to Sports Authority and pharamacies and see if any of them will hire weekend only, those hadn't occurred to me.

We do have family local to us, but my mom works f/t and then some (she runs her own business) and my ILs aren't available to be daycare and have made that clear from day 1. MIL works as well, FIL is retired but they would rather hand us money to survive than be daycare providers.

  • Oh, and I've applied to be childcare at a few gyms and never heard back from them. 2 would allow me to bring my children, the other 3 would not.

  • I'll look into hardware stores as well, as long as they'll take someone who can't tell the difference between a hammer, a wrench and a screwdriver lol! I'm better than DH, but we are not people who DIY at all!

What about being a banquet server? I had several friends in college who worked at hotels and only worked banquets. They typically worked Friday and Saturday nights and made really good $ from what I remember. One friend actually kept working their after graduating just for the extra $. Also check with event centers that do weddings and conferences.
I'll look into that, thanks! I always assumed they were the ones who had already worked in restaurants and proven themselves good servers then moved up to those jobs, but maybe not :)

  • That's crazy to me. I was a retail manager prior I having DS and I hired plenty of people to only work weekends. Some works Fri-Sun and some just Sat-Sun. I also have 3 friends who currently work Sat-Sun at Starbucks

Really? Every time I've interviewed I've been told I need to work a minimum of one weekly shift, including Starbucks (worked there in college). It always seemed crazy to me, too. Guess when they have a huge pool of applicants they can put ridiculous restrictions on it. When I worked at gap three years ago the manager flat out told me they only wanted people who were committed to gap, so they didn't want it to be a second job :(.

  • Maybe try Sam's or Costco ?  Even if those actual stores don't need you, perhaps you can ask the company that employs the people that pass out their demos / samples.

I forgot about those stores! I don't shop at them (kinda hate them) but they're worth a try. I think there are some nearby...

I'm not positive Cracker Barrel is in my state. I think there might be one over an hour away, but that would be the closest.

Committed to the gap? LOL I alsom had 4-5 SAHMs who works early morning shifts. Usually 7-11 or 9-1 while their kids were in school. Maybe I was just too accommodating lol.

  • Are there any new stores opening soon in your area ?  I think usually that is the best time to apply, when they are doing mass hiring.
  • Plus also, it's the holiday season...lots of places go on a hiring binge. Good time to apply :) good luck! What made you decide to get a job?
  • See, now holiday help I would require weekdays/weeknights

Cracker Barrel is at least an hour away unfortunately.

How about the movie theaters? The busiest time is Friday/Saturday/Sunday?

Between the end of the tax cuts (which, despite the inconvenience to me, I support), a sudden new rule requiring post docs to contribute 5% to a pension fund that they will never benefit from (DHs job is temp and it's unlikely he'll be able to remain at his current institution) and Emma's tuition going up we need more money to stay afloat.

I'm hoping that the holiday season they'll be willing to hire weekends only and that will get me in the door.

  • You can try gyms for the morning shift, like 3am until 7. Or you can try wedding halls, those are mostly weekends only.

You should be able to with Walmart.
I don't know of one near me. I mean, there probably is, but I've never looked for it. I have moral oppositions to walmart, so I won't even try there.

  • Guys, no joke, my next door neighbor just posted on FB looking for f/t daycare for her daughter! I get in touch with her, so am really hoping maybe that will work out! We both grew up in town and she was a year ahead of my sister and friendly with her. This could be ideal! Her daughter is a month older than Drew and a little sweetie!

Oh wow, great coincidence! Do you think full time will be too much? On the other hand, should be a great $$$ opportunity!
Adding another kid f/t would be easy. In fact, it would be great for Drew because they play well together. He's lonely when the girls are gone and plays well with her so that could be perfect. And the money would be great!  And she's a teacher, so the days Julia's home she will be as well (she teaches in the next town over, but it's the same calendar as our town).

  • Great news! Dd2 misses dd1 a ton while she's gone. I hope it works it, no missing weekend family time, either. :)
Exactly! We've been putting off my getting a job until the last possible minute because we don't know how we'll manage it (DH works most weekend days in addition to his f/t job) but finally really need the money. If this can avoid me taking a retail job I'll be one happy lady!

  • JcPenney hires weekend only.  Or let them know you could start at 7pm on a weekday.  As the holidays get closer, store hours get later.
