Croup

I thought someone had dealt with it already but nothing came up in the search results. So anyone dealt with it yet? Any tips? We just spent an hour in the ER because the kid scared the shit out of me with the barking cough and the ped said she needed some steroids. Luckily we have a great hospital with wonderful nurses who gave her a little stuffed bear for being so good. But still scared the hell out of me.

Re: Croup

  • Tucker had it back in January (Feb? I can't remember).  It is the most frightening experience.  He got some kind of steroid I believe.  It cleared up super fast.  What our pedi recommended that would help (and did tremendously) is to run a very hot shower and then go stand in the steam for 15 minutes or the exact opposite, go stand outside in the cold air (not sure if its cold enough at night yet where you are for that one to work).  Also, see if you can incline her mattress any.  Luckily back then Tucker could still fit in the RNP so he slept in that for a few days.  Hope she feels better soon!

  • Thank you ladies, and it is pretty cold here already, we had a winter storm yesterday and several inches of snow, so we can go outside and then into the bathroom to steam. And we got the steroids last night so it's just keeping her comfy and drinking fluids in between it sounds like.

  • I think we're lucky it got so cold here, the striations had stopped by the time we got to the ER and so only got the one dose of steroids. She is acting so much better today though, just tired and already went down for a nap.

  • Lots of rest and fluids. Cold air also helps calm the coughing. We stood in front of the freezer a lot when DD#1 had it.

We had it several times with my first one. Scary! As pps said cold air and steam helps and steroids clear it up in a day or two. Hope she feels better soon.

  • Thanks for the encouragement ladies! @mommymadness yeah, we had about 5 inches yesterday alone and now it's all melting. We didn't go out and play in it because of her being sick and my asthma acting up. She was very interested in walking through it though. :-)
