Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Bilingual home

We are a bilingual household. My LO is 10 months. She seems way behind on word comprehension. The only word she seems to understand is no, because it is the same in both languages and my hubby says it a lot. Is anyone else experiencing this? I expect her to be a bit slower speaking, but I am surprised that she doesn't seem to be responding to anything. Sometimes the sign for eat and us saying no. That's about it. I've been trying to sign more for a couple of months now and she isn't getting it. Not just not doing it but not responding to it when I do it. And then of course the spoken language either. Any suggestions? Am I expecting too much? It seems like others are moving forward.

Re: Bilingual home

  • first, i'd say your LO is still young enough that this isn't necessarily a concern yet.  second, i've worked in early childhood for several years now.  i'm not a speech pathologist, and i haven't done any actual research, so my information is purely anecdotal, but i've noticed that children who are raised in a bilingual environment appear to develop their verbal skills more slowly.  in fact, many of them are identified with speech delays when there isn't any actual delay.  their brains just need to take a little more time learning and processing because they have 2 languages to identify, decode, imitate, etc.  i'm a huge, huge supporter of raising children bilingually- it is such a gift for them to grow up speaking two languages fluently.  i'd continue to talk to her all the time in both languages as much as possible, watch her, and if you're truly concerned, maybe get an EI evaluation to ease your concerns, but my guess is, she's taking in a lot more than she lets on, and in time she's going to end up way ahead of the curve.

  • My lo is in a bilingual environment, she seems to understand certain phrases in both languages. Other things more English since I am mostly with her, but just keep chatting with baby in both languages eventually it will all make sense.

  • I have heard that there can be a delay. I was wondering if other moms were experiencing the same thing. Thank you for your replies. Any suggestions on books?
