Babies: 0 - 3 Months

For those that had their tubes tied after birth...

I am pregnant with my 3rd and final child due in April.  DH and I decided that while I am in the hospital I will go ahead and get a tubal since we are done having children.  But I have never had surgery before and I'm kind of scared.  Anyone that has had it done, how was it? Was the recovery long? Painful? I am not nervous for labor or delivery one bit, but I'm terrified for the surgery. TIA

  • I was wondering that too. But I thought they will only tie your tubes at that time if you are having a c-section.

  • No. My doc will do it even if you deliver vaginally.
  • MH and I are done with 3. We decided if I ended up with a csection, I would get it done. If not, he would get a vasectomy. The vasectomy has less recovery time. I ended up delivering our third vaginally, so he is getting it done in a few weeks.

I would discuss it with your OB.

  • It's a laparoscopic procedure and done within a matter of days after a vaginally delivery or done during a c-section and already opened up. Generally, they don't knock you out and just give you a spinal, so you are numb from the chest down. You typically get an extra day in the hospital, but are back up and around after the spinal wheres off. The biggest issue is the gas they use to blow up your belly to see everything. If can get trapped under you shoulder blades and cause some discomfort, but the more mobile you are the quicker it works itself out. It's really a pretty simple thing and your recovery is usually pretty quick, given that you are already recovering from birth.

A vasectomy is easy too, but he will have to go back several times to give semen samples to make sure it was done properly and there are no sperm present, which in turn is more lab work, maybe time off work to do it first thing in the morning, etc.
