Premie baby wearing

Hello all! I'm new here. Just welcomed our first little one at 35 weeks. We're very lucky he's perfectly healthy. Looking for wrap/carrier suggestions that would work best for a little one. He's just under 5lbs. Would love something that will work now but will grow with him. Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Re: Premie baby wearing

  • I don't think babies under 7 lbs are supposed to be worn... at least that's what the info with my Moby and a quick google search to confirm said. That being said, I do love my Moby and it can be worn from 7 lbs up.

  • A woven wrap in the upright tummy to tummy position is the best bet for a preemie. A thin narrow per wrap is ideal. You want to be extra cautious that a tiny baby is not slumping or going chin to chest. Wearing a tiny baby is off label but the weight limits are more of a liability issue forthe company as a preemie worn incorrectly is more vulnerable to problems than a bigger baby worn wrong.
  • I wore my son in the moby, he was a bit over 6 lbs. I made sure to do my checks and kept checking.

I wore DD in a ring sling (upright, tummy to tummy) when she was 5lbs. It is "off-label," but I was very cautious to constantly check her head position and airway, and I would do it again. Around 6lbs (which was 4 weeks old, for us), I started wearing her in a froggy position in a stretchy wrap, again being very conscientious about her airway. In both cases, I wore her very high on my chest, and did not tuck her head into the fabric.

I did *not* use an SSC until she was the recommended 7lbs, because my (babywearing) pedi cautioned against it.

ETA: here's a PIP of her at about 5lbs in the ring sling. Her feet were in the sling, in a froggy position, with her tummy against me, and her head was high up near my collarbone. Some of the more expert baby wearers could probably tweak this for me if there are things i should have done differently, but I thought it might be useful for OP to see how high up she was on my body.
