Natural Birth

Is there hope

edited October 2013 in Natural Birth
Hello,

my husband and I are currently TTC and we both decided we want a midwife and a natural birth. My side of the family is all for it, my mom had a natural birth and her best friend is a midwife. It's normal to us. However both my friends and my husband's side of the family are very negative and telling me that because of my size I'll be begging for pain medication and I will also be forced to have a c-section.

I'm 4'11 and 120 LBS, is what they say true? Because of my size, will I be required a c-section? I feel that I am wide in the hips, and that God has given me the right body for a natural birth. Knowing that a c-section could be guaranteed makes me scared to conceive, woman use to be able to give birth before c-sections, why can't they now?!

On a side-note: Does anyone in the Cincinnati area recommend Christ Hospital and their midwives? After researching online they're about the only place I could find that does water births, which is something I'm considering! Any other recommendations for the Cincinnati Tri State area would be great, thanks!

  • Tell them they have no clue what they are talking about and trust your body. Here's a good link on the "your pelvis is too small to birth a baby" line. The first step is trusting your body and it seems like you are.

  • For whatever it's worth, I'm five feet tall, weigh ninety pounds and had a lovely med-free birth, no problem.  I actually brought it up with my midwife. I was afraid I was too small, and she just smiled and said she had no reason to think I couldn't do it if I wanted to. So I did. It was hard, but worth it. You can do it. Tell your friends to stop talking to you about it if they bring it up, and don't talk to them about it any more. They sound like they don't know anything about natural birth, and are only going to frighten you with their ignorance, even if they mean well. Keep the knowledgeable people close, and lean on them when you feel frightened. They will help you. You can do this. Really.

  • Your body size is not a problem. Their negativity may be, so I'd just not discuss your plans with them. You can always say something like "there's always meds if I need them"--as long as you don't convince yourself!

  • my midwife always told me that your body will almost always grow a baby that is the exact right size for it to birth.  i'm 5'6", but my kiddo was only 6 lbs 5 oz when he was born, because that's what he needed to be for my body to squeeze him out.  my bf's SIL is around 5'1" and has had two vaginal births with each baby weighing well over 8 lbs.  trust that your body will cook that LO until they're the perfect size for you to birth him/her :)  and whenever people told me i'd never be able to handle the pain, i just used it at fuel for my natural birth fire.  i love telling the naysayers that i never once asked for pain relief ;)

  • I'm 5' even and normally weigh around 115. I've had three unmedicated, completely uncomplicated births. Including a 9 pounder. Don't let them get you down!
  • Hi! I can tell you that my one of my best friends is a midwife at The Christ Hospital, Amanda Dalhover and she's amazing. We went to nursing school together and she was my matron of honor.  She delivered both of her children naturally and she is so supportive.    Also, I've worked with all the midwives in the group when they were at St. Elizabeth in Northern Kentucky.  I would highly recommend them and if I still lived in the area that's where I would be delivering.  Best Wishes
