Running Mamas

who is still running?
My pacenta previa has resolved itself and the doctor cleared me to exercise/run again. I haven't done any cardio or lifting since 12 weeks (so for the last 6 weeks) but prior to that was running 4 miles 2x/week at a minimum.

I went for a 4 mile run today and felt great. My lungs were a little angry and my knees hurt at the last 1/4 mile but stopped as soon as my run ended. I'd like to resume running 4 miles 2x/week (maybe 3) and I really need to get lifting again (hoping for 3 30 minute sessions/week).

How are your workouts going? Any running goals while PG? Has anyone started wearing any kind of support belt?

Re: Running Mamas

  • I'm not a distance/endurance runner, I prefer HIIT or walking, but I've been trying to keep up with my workouts, including weight training. It's been much easier since I hit the second trimester and feel much better.  I'm impressed you kept you distance the same through the first tri; that's when I was really struggling with keeping my workouts up and they were definitely far less intense than normal!

My only goal is consistency: working out 4-5 days a week. I have not started wearing anything for support, but I'm a couple weeks behind you and only pregnant with one.

That is wonderful your placenta previa resolved! Are you planning on doing any races/events?

  • I was runner before pregnancy (nothing very fast or huge, just about 15 miles a week).  I did a tri at 6 weeks, & then was told not to run the rest of first tri.

I haven't started back up yet because I've still been super exhausted - but I am scheduled to run a 10K race at the end of the month.  I was going to see how I felt after 3m tomorrow, hopefully it goes well.

    Glad your 4 went great!

  • I was running/racing half marathons before and have slowed down to 3-4 miles a couple times a week. That's about as far as I can go before I have to pee again, lol. I did do a Tough Mudder with hubby last weekend (and don't freak out, I skipped all the obstacles that would put baby at risk).

I think I'm going to look into a support belt in the next couple weeks. Saw the midwife yesterday and she said I should pop in a couple of weeks but so far my abs are in huge protest and trying to hold it all in still.

  • I LOVE to run...but running freaks me out while pregnant :( So I stopped when I found out.

  • Hi!  Glad to see some other runners!  I've been running pretty well this time around, very thankfully.  I was a little more hesitant with DS just because I was nervous, but with this pregnancy I have been able to stay pretty active.  Running has helped my queasiness (probably just getting fresh air), but I'll take it.  I was a distance runner pre-pregnancy, so I have cut back a lot, but I am hoping to be able to run a 1/2 marathon in 2 weeks that I have been training for over the past few months.  Feeling pretty positive about it.  I'm going to be way slow, but it's just for fun.  My theory is to make sure everything is a-ok with your doctor, that you feel well and no pain, and just be content with whatever you are able to do that day.  My only goal is to try to keep running - ANY amount.
I haven't worn a belt (and didn't with the little bit I ran with DS), but I'm keeping it in mind this time.

Hope your runs keep going well!  Glad you got the ok to be more active, I'm sure that's a huge relief!

I"m running a 5K at thanksgiving with a client and I've been pushing her to try for a 10K. She is definitely ready for the 10K so I think I'm going to suggest to her that we try the 5K route twice, since there are hardly any hills.

If I hadn't lost 6 weeks of exercise i would be really antsy to do a half, not for records or anything, mostly just to say I did it while pg with twins.

so jealous of the half...if I hadn't lost 6 weeks worth of exercise I'd be pushing for one. Not sure if yo can feel the baby move yet but it helps me to feel better about running when I feel LO move afterwards. i know exercise is safe but it gives me a little extra reassurance.

Let me know if you look into support belts!

  • I'm still running, though just 3-4 miles at a time. I ran last night and wore a small support band for the first time. I'm not that bug yet, but it still felt great. I plan to get a more substantial support Ina couple weeks. The one I have right now was loaned to me. I'm hoping that with the support I can keep running for most of this pregnancy. I love knowing other ladies are running too! Good runs and good running weather to all!
  • Pumpkinsmuggler what half are you running? I'm planning to do the Nike Women's half in two weeks. I'm feeling very anxious. I was an active half marthoner but was so sick in the first trimester I didn't run much at all. I'm planning to jog/walk this one. I ran a 5k yesterday just for practice and hoping to keep my stamina! It's hard after running sub-8 miles to go so slow but it is all for a very special reason! Good luck on whatever race you are doing.
  • I'm almost 17 weeks and still running! I only run about 3 miles a couple times a week. I don't have a support band yet but feel I will need one soon:)

  • @YankeePeach08 - Sadly, I can't feel the baby move yet.  Hopefully I will soon!  I know that helps.  I guess the plus of morning sickness is that it has a nice re-assuring quality to it...  The half may be a bit of a stretch, but my longer runs have felt pretty good.  I'm just taking it easy and I'm not going to freak if I have to walk or anything.  My dad loves this race and we signed up right after it last year!  Ha - of course.  We also signed up for a late spring marathon in those 2 weeks I didn't realize I was pregnant!  So...that may/will be a run walk thing, too!  Hopefully I can keep running pretty well as long as possible.

@kesterkin - I'm doing the Indianapolis Half Marathon.  It's really a great course and fall is in full swing usually by that week.  It goes through the woods and stuff, but not trails.  I pushed DS in a jogger in a 5k last weekend and found it really fun.  I think "running" our time was still around 33min!  haha  Sub-8s are sweet.  I was trying to shave it off from 8:30s / 8:40s right before I got pregnant, but now I'm a good 10+!  I always push the jogger for training though, which has proven to be awesome training in the past, but not sure it makes much difference anymore.  I need a tank that says "I'm slow because I'm pregnant" or something...
Good luck in the women's half!  That sounds fun.

I'm really so glad to see lots of people attempting to run like me!  High fives for everyone who even goes out there!  I found some other running gals on the "health and fitness" board, too.  Looks like some hardcore runners on there, but they have good topics for more recreational-types like me!

  • I got in my first run in two months today - I was worried, but 3 slow miles felt great, and I am hoping I can get back into it now that I am now so tired and pukey!  I did want to take a nap immediately afterward, but feeling better now!

  • I had started running before getting pregnant, but due to bleeding in 1st tri had to stop. I am slowing making my way back into the gym. I'll work myself into a light jog then make sure to cool down well.

I am preferring yoga and swimming over running lately though.

Congrats to my TTC buddy Madeline! Cheering for all the strong 3T ladies!

  • Ladies, any of you using water belts when you run? Haven't used mine in a while but wondering if anyone else has used one and felt comfortable.
  • I had stopped running due to ms, but started aqua jogging in deep water and I have not had any problems with the belt, but have a feeling I will just need to adjust was the baby grows (either above or below).

I actually have been an avid runner for quite a few years and my doctor has given me the okay to keep running until I choose to stop. I actually ran a full marathon 1.5 weeks ago at 13 weeks and I'm planning to do another on the 20th :). Just make sure to listen to your body and some exercise is always good!
  • Hi Also a distance runner here (15 marathons 1 ironman) and i am having no problem taking a break from the long distance training! I had bad ms the first tri and so no marathon this year. I am doing a jeff galoway run walk 3x a week (30-40 min) and yoga 1x. I am a swimmer but i have not made it to the pool in forever hoping to get back there when my belly gets bigger. I think any kind of movement we can do is good :)
  • i'm almost 17 weeks and still running (slooowww) several times a week. over the past couple of weeks i've noticed that whenever i'm running, i feel pressure on my bladder (even though i make sure to use bathroom before i head out). i don't feel it when walking. i don't really have a belly yet, but i'm wondering if anyone has experienced this and found a support belt helps, or other tips? or is it just another joy of pregnancy ;)

I use my water belt periodically.  A little less now that it's nice and cool outside, but I do notice that my legs feel less heavy when I have plenty of water.  And if I snug it up a little under my bump, it almost feels like a support.  I also did just start using a support to run.  My friend loaned me this one.

But in a few weeks I'm going to start using this one.
