How soon after starting a new job (in a new office, new company, etc. Not just a promotion within a company that you've been with for a while) would you feel comfortable getting pregnant?

  • The way this title alone is worded, I kind of envisioned someone having sex in the office the first day of a new job.

And I would have to advise against that.

Exactly this. I have no idea how long either will take so I'm just going for both.

  • I showed up at a job 11 weeks pregnant. They were pissed when they found out later. In my defense they came to me wanting me to work there I wasn't looking for a job.

All things being perfect I'd wait until probation period was over.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • As the vessel, I would wait a year so FMLA is in place in case of any complications that needed addressed. But DH is a SAHD right now and I'm fine with him walking right onto a job, because he doesn't physically have to carry a baby. For some reason, I clicked SS since we are both responsible for the making of the baby.

  • You don't know how long it is going to take you to get pregnant. I got laid off from my job. I was looking for a job while TTC. And I was still looking for a job up until I found out it was twins at 10 weeks and really started showing super early.

  • I started training for a job the day I found out I was pg with DD. I ended up having to quit and go on bedrest at 24 weeks, but nobody there knew I was pg until I quit. If I didn't have a history of high risk pregnancies, I wouldn't put off getting pg for a job.

  • You don't know how long it is going to take you to get pregnant. You could get it first try, you could be over a year.. never know.. I got laid off from my job. I was looking for a job while TTC. And I was still looking for a job up until I found out it was twins at 10 weeks and really started showing super early.

  • I would not stop TTC for a job. No way. However, if I wasn't already trying and was already looking for a job, I might delay it by a few months until I found the new job, but if DH and I already knew we wanted to get pregnant, I wouldn't delay it simply because of a job.

  • I'm glad to see these responses and I'm 100% in agreement.  I'm not putting off my family planning even though I've only been in my new role for a few months now, but a good friend of mine just raised the issue because she's in the same boat and IS planning on holding off for a while.

  • We put of TTC for a year or so because I was looking for a new job.  I still don't have that new position, so I'm kind of mad that we waited.  I'm actively pursuing both!

  • If mat leave/benefits/insurance/probation isn't an issue, then I would have no problem showing up pg. However with my first we waited a little bit to ensure I had my 1 year probation done and qualified for top up. I wanted to ensure the security of my permanent position and ensure I qualified for employment insurance and top up from my employer.

  • We started TTC last summer when I still had a job.  Well, things got fucked up.  I got sick and lost my job.  We started TTC again this summer.  I've got a new job, but it's only a sub job and ends in January.  If I am pregnant by then it will be tough for me to get a job.  I recognize that none of this is ideal, however, shit just happens and you never know how it will affect your life.  If I were not 34, then maybe I would be willing to wait a little while until things got a little more settled.  But that's not my reality right now, so oh well.  I fully think you just have to do what you feel is right for you and just figure it out.  That's what I am doing, because what else am I gonna do?  Sit and hope I find a job (what if I don't)?  Sit and not work because I might get pregnant (what if I don't)?  I

  • I personally plan on being at my new job for a year before we start TTC. It fits in with our personal timeline, and I am the only person who does this job here. It is a great job with great benefits that I envision staying at until I retire, and while I know they can't penalize me for getting pregnant, I always want to stay on their good side and get a good bit of time under my belt.

If we got pregnant before then, I wouldn't be bothered, but we plan on waiting.
  • I would want to be there long enough to qualify for FMLA and STD (typically 1 year, so I'd ideally get pregnant 3+ months after starting).

  • We've been planning on TTC since March and I had a job. Then I was laid off in June and pregnant in July. I lost the baby but we're trying again and I've been looking for a job ever since June. I'll take a good job when I get it and get pregnant when I get pregnant. Not planning to tell any employer about it until as long as I can wait.
  • I transferred to a different school district and am off my probationary period November 1 (11 months). So we specifically started trying around August so I wouldn't show before November 1.

Same here. I don't really want to start off pregnant, but I don't know how log it will take to find a new job. I don't know how long it will take me to get pregnant either.

  • I voted as if I was in the situation today, which I kind of am. I just started a new job, but not ku. Oh well, they'll have to deal. The only thing I miss about my new job is the sick time I had banked for maternity leave. I'm praying we get KU this cycle or the next.

This. As long as my benefits had kicked in, I'd go for it.

  • I'm actively job hunting and TTC. I've thought about this a lot and decided that I'll worry aboutit if/when I get offered a new job or if/when I get KU.

There are so many factors and what-ifs, and so much of what I worry about never happens. So I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

  • I started my new job in April and knew that I'd be waiting a year to start TTC. It's my first job using my masters degree and new licensure. I have to work a lot of hours/years in the field so I can get an advanced license. I wanted to have as much time as a full time worker to go towards that before changing up my schedule once a baby comes.

I personally know of two women who were fired or 'let go' after they told their bosses they were pregnant. Both of them worked at jobs where they had preliminary contracts that stated within the first year they could be fired for any reason. The jobs just didn't renew the contract after that year. It's so shitty that this is a thing we even have to think about that guys don't even consider...
  • I quit my job and don't have another job yet. That may be stupid but I have been putting it off for the last year in case I got pregnant, which has not happened yet. I've given them 6 weeks notice at my job and am confident that I will find another job fairly quickly. For the last year I have been living off half of my pay cheque and sort of practicing for mat leave so I've paid off most of my debt and saved a decent chunk of change for an emergency fund. I'm not suggesting that people follow my lead on this but I'm happy with my decision. I also think that the stress I was feeling at work was contributing to some unhealthy habits (eat, sleep etc) and might have been a factor in not getting ku'd as easily. I guess time will tell but it feels right for me.
  • With DS, I started a new job 5 mo pregnant.  I didn't tell anyone (they just thought I was fat).  It wasn't until I was offered a promotion (it was retail, the promotion happened pretty quickly) that I told my boss.  I still got the promotion.

That being said, I did not qualify for FMLA because I had not yet been with the company for a full year.  I figure that the closest I would ever want to cut it for a planned pregnancy is 4 months.  That way you can get your 4 months in plus 9 months being pregnant (in case you're a few weeks early) and you will still qualify for FMLA.  Regardless of my meticulous logic, the company I currently work for does not qualify for FMLA anyway because we are too small.

  • DH and I planned to start trying last April, but I lost my job mid March. We did choose to wait until I started with a new employer. We started trying in June and the company went out of business. Luckily finances changed and we are able to continue trying while I look for work. I have no problem showing up to a new job KU.
  • Just a thought... one of my co-workers was hired and was then KU within a month.

She apologized to her manager, and his response was something to the effect of "I was hiring a 31-year old who had been recently married and bought a home. This isn't a huge shock."

Which was great of him, of course. And frankly, I'd hate to work for someone who wasn't going to be supportive of the work/life balance. What I feel like makes it hard is that tou can't talk about these things during the hiring process so neither party knows what they are getting in to.

  • This is why I :x the company I work for. Benefits started the day I did. No probation period had 1 girl in training that was pregnant by 6 months being there she was out on bed rest they covered her with half pay as short term disability. You can always ask their terms on maternity leave during an interview.
