Peanut butter

Are any of you giving them peanut butter yet? My pedi said to wait, but now I'm reading that things have flipped the other way, that they're finding that waiting is not only unnecessary, but may even encourage the allergy. Neither myself nor my husband had any food allergies. I was thinking of giving her a little peanut butter on toast on a weekend when I can watch her. Thoughts?

Re: Peanut butter

  • I've been giving it to Dagny since about 10 months. No food allergies in our family so I wasn't worried. I think you are fine to try it!

  • I started giving her peanut butter on toast around 12 months.  Our pedi said it was fine but not in large amounts because it is a choking hazard. LO loves it and since she is a picky eater she gets it 2X a week.
  • We've been doing pb for a few months. I usually add a 100% fruit preserve with it.

  • We've been giving peanut butter since 10ish months. It's not a regular part of her diet but she eats it occasionally. One of her favorite snacks is peanut butter crackers.

We did it about 10 months, but had a reaction to it, so no more for us.  We've switched to sunbutter, which is a good nutfree substitute, just in case you decide you want to wait, but want the good proteins and fats that come from nut/seed spreads.

BTW, I love the siggy pic with your DH and LO.  Very sweet and so beautiful!

ETA: No food allergies on either side either, so who know where his food allergy comes from!

  • DS loves peanut butter. I was nervous to give it to him, but like you, we don't have any allergies. He started around 12 months and has some every day now.

  • I am allergic to peanuts so was worried, but we tried some peanut butter and she was fine around a year. She still loves getting some and mh uses it often when he has her.

  • Tucker eats PB all the time and has been for a few months, I never heard to wait.

  • Hey DM, good to see you back here :) Our pedi told us to wait until Ava is 3 before giving any nuts. I thought that was ridiculous so we tried giving her some peanut butter a few weeks ago. No reaction so now she gets it almost daily! She loves it!
  • Cooper could live off peanut butter if I let him. He's been eating it since a year or so.

  • I waited until one and she did fine, although its not her favorite yet. I hope all is well! I think of you both often. :)

  • Neither DH or I have food allergies and none in my immediate family. My DS was having weird reactions to baby food so I insisted on allergry testing. He is SEVERELY allergic to peanut butter and mildly allergic to fish. I am so glad I trusted my gut and pushed for allergy testing.
