Wool Allergy?

I used a wool cover for the first time last night and this morning DD had redness and little bumps on the inside of both thighs. I can only assume it was a reaction to the wool or lanolin. Is there anything I can do, or is wool just not going to work for us?

Re: Wool Allergy?

  • I'm thinking that if the allergy was to wool, the redness would be everywhere

  • DS gets raw inside his thighs, and I think I have finally narrowed it down to the fitteds rubbing on his thighs.

  • I'm allergic to wool, but only get a contact dermatitis, what sounds like the rash you described, where it touches me, so like I had been given a wool coat and it was lined with something else and I only got the rash at the edges where the wool actually touched me. I don't know if that solves any mysteries for you, and it certainly doesn't help, but if the diaper has a liner of a different fabric, that would explain why it only irritated her in a certain spot. Most allergies to wool are a contact dermatitis type reaction, so that seems very likely. :( Sorry!

  • I think a lanolin allergy is more common than wool. But that might be because my mom is allergic to lanolin. And what you describe does sound like contact dermatitis like pp said and is an allergic reaction to either wool or lanolin. Regardless wool needs lanolin to be water resistant. So you likely won't be able to use wool.

  • I'm allergic to wool too.  My kid wears a wool cover (over a fitted) at night and I'm glad neither of my kids are allergic, but since we bedshare, sometimes I wake up with a rash where he was up against my stomach at night.  I have to put the sheet between us. :)

  • If it turns out that you are dealing with an allergy, I've heard of people using acrylic or fleece soakers with some success.
  • What kind of wool? The reason I ask is because I work retail and we sell wool socks. A lot of people think they are allergic when it is the type of wool and how it was processed. Older wool types (which something) has short hair fibers that don't get sewn down. Those short hairs poke the skin and agitate it. Giving the appearance of an allergic reaction.

  • There was nothing on her belly or anywhere else, but her fitted is pretty big so I'm not sure where all it actually touched her.  I'm thinking maybe it was just scratchy/irritating.  I bought it on etsy and she's letting me send it back and just pay shipping to try a softer one made of merino.  Hoping that helps, otherwise I guess I'll try fleece.  I was excited about this one because it's a "wrap", so it's one size!
