Granted, my kid isn't old enough to eat a meal, so I'm not an expert, but I've typically found kids come in two camps.. The ones who will eat anything and the ones who will only eat 'kid' foods. We tend to just cook what we would anyways, typically just nothing too spicy or messy when we have friends with kids over and haven't had a problem yet.
when i saw the subject line i immediatly thought pasta, with meatballs. kids usually scoop that up without issue. since you are looking for something beyond pasta, its going to depend if the kiddos have adventurous taste buds. Thinking along the lines of chili served with salad and bread or pulled bbq chicken or roast beef sandwiches from the crock with oven baked sweet potato fries....can you tell I had a crappy breakfast!

Update the grilled cheese sandwich to the adults with premium cheese, avacado, tomato bacon, truffle oil and the classic grilled cheese for the kids. Compliment with chips and fancy dip (for the grown ups). Enchiladas or quesadillas.

I'm not sure how much time you want to spend cooking when your guests are there, but I like the idea of make your own quesadillas - you have the "insides" in separate bowls - e.g., cheese, peppers, tomatoes, beans, chicken (just get a store rotisserie chicken and shred it) and/or beef - and the kids can pick what they want or maybe they would just want the chicken or beans or veggies separately. You can make some rice, maybe a salad, and have some chips and salsa/guac and, viola, Mexican fiesta that everyone can have fun making. Quesadillas on the stove top take a few minutes each to cook.
Re: Dinner ideas for having friends over w kids?
My fave recipe is https://www.skinnytaste.com/2011/08/chicken-rollatini-stuffed-with-zucchini.html
you can make regular cutlets for the kids and stove top stuffing.
