Bed times?

I suspect that we are putting our son down a little early (between 7:15 and 7:30), but am loathe to change it if we don't need to and I honestly have no idea what a "normal" bedtime is for a toddler, or if there even is one. That said, when do you all put your little ones down for the night?

ETA my son is 21 months, if it matters.

Re: Bed times?

  • We do it at around 8:30/8:45.  Both of us work, so we want to be able to spend some time with our kids each day before bedtime.

DS - 18 months - goes to bed between 8:30-9:00, and he doesn't seem sleepy or ready for bed any earlier than that.  While I'd love to have more "me" time in the evening, this time works for us because DH gets to spend time with DS in the evenings (DH doesn't get home from work until around 7pm) and I don't feel like I have to rush through dinner/bath/bedtime routine right after we get home from work/daycare.

  • Our daughter is almost 18 months and she is in bed by 7, 7:30 the latest. She is usually dropping by then.

My friend who also has an 18 month old puts him to bed at 9:30.

I guess it is what works for your family. :)

  • DS is 22 months and we try to lay him down around 8:00. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later depending on the day we had. He's going through a phase of not wanting to sleep and it takes us about an hour to get him to bed on any give night. It doesn't matter if we try to lay him down at 7, 8, or 9. Hopefully he kicks this habit soon.

  • LO goes down between 7:30 and 8 pm.  She only takes one nap at DC and it is for an hour.  By 7pm she is tired and cranky.
  • He's in his crib, lights out, noise machine on by 7pm (sometimes 6:45 if he's just overly tired).  Some nights he's asleep in minutes, others, (like last night) he talks to himself for upwards of 30 minutes.  I really don't care what he does in there at that point as long as he's not screaming.  He'll get himself to sleep.  During the week, we get him up around 6:15 so we can be out the door by 6:35 for work/DC.  Weekends, I let him sleep as late as he wants (anytime between 7am-8am).  Been like this since he was 6 months.
  • DD goes to bed between 7:30-7:45 she's 13 months.

  • Between 6:45-7. That's what it's been for a really long time and since doing Ferber she'sgone to sleep really well, so I don't want to mess with that. It would be nice to be able to spend more time with her, but she seems tired. She'll be 15months in a couple weeks.

  • I've actually been wondering this same thing. DD is 20 months and in bed by 7pm. We start bedtime routine of bath, book, bed at 6:30. I feel it might be early, but with DC only giving one nap she is usually more than happy to go to bed. It sucks because i don't get home from work until 6pm so DH has already fed her and I get only a half hour with her. I agree with PP though who said to keep doing it if it works!

  • DS is in bed around  7 pm and sleeps all the way up until 6 am. He put himself on that schedule, so I don't interfere with it.

  • Since 4 mos (currently 18.5 mos) we have been on a 730 bedtime. It works for us. I am pretty manic about making sure she gets to bed on time. A well rested child is a happy child!

  • In bed between 7 and 730 and sleeps till approximately 6am or so. He has to get up at that time for daycare. Weekends he sleeps till 6 or 630. One afternoon nap everyday 1-2 hrs long

  • My 13-month-old goes to bed between 7 and 7:30, which works well for us. *Keep in mind that in another month it will be daylight savings time and 7:15/7:30 will feel like 8:15/8:30 to your toddler, so now probably wouldn't be the greatest time to change to a later bedtime!*
  • DD has always been a night owl. I've tried to move her bedtime earlier and all attempts have been major failures.

So we go with what works for her. We put her to bed at around 8:45-9pm. She's been on this schedule since about 10months and is 16months now. My parents watch her while DH and I work and they do so at our house so we don't get her up in the morning before we leave. She usually wakes up around 8:30-9:30am and takes 1 nap for 1-2hrs in the afternoon.

We still have evenings like last night where is takes an hour to get her to fall asleep though, so in reality there are days she is not asleep until close to 10pm. I don't worry too much about what time, and focus more on total number of hours she sleeps. If she is getting 12-14hrs/day that is good.

  • DS2 is in bed by 7pm and is usually asleep by 7:10 and is up for the day by 7am.
Thanks, everyone, for the replies! It has definitely made me feel better about his current bedtime.

This is also a fantastic point that I had not thought of yet. You are right that if we are going to play around with it, waiting is probably wise.

  • 1 year next week. Bedtime is around 8:30.
  • Start bedtime routine about 6, she's out for the count by 6:30pm and sleeps til roughly 6am. Works for us, I NEED my night time to relax, plus that's when I tutor (my PT job) and I'm a morning person anyway so I don't mind getting up at 6 with her. She only takes one nap a day from 10-11:30ish. She's ready by 6 most nights to sleep.

We tried a later bedtime since most of the week DH doesn't get home until 8pm but to be honest by then he's ready to relax anyway so it wasn't worth keeping her up, me unhappy, for 15 min of time with DH then I do bedtime routine. Now we just visit him at work daily and he gets to see her for 30min or so before he goes to work.

I knew a family that their 3 year old was up til like 11pm since dad didn't get home til 9ish. But he loved that time with her. And the wife was SAHM so they just both slept in the mornings and it worked for them.

Do what works for your family.
