Picky eater

My LO was a great eater. We have never have any problems with breast milk to formula, starting on solids, moving to chunkier purees. She would eat anything I would give her. I thought I was so lucky! Now she is refusing anything green and all veggies. She won't eat bread even if I try to smear fruit on it. Basically, there are about three things she'll eat now. She just got a couple new teeth but other than that, everything else is normal. I keep trying to give her other things but she won't take it. Do I just keep giving her what she'll take? How do I get her back to eating veggies and other things?

  • Ditto everything PP said!

DS has gone through many phases of being picky, usually associated with teething.  They last anywhere from 5-7 days.

My suggestion is pretty much what PP wrote - keep offering different kinds of food, and agree on different preparation with sauces or seasoning.   For example, I can't get DS to eat steamed cauliflower, but he'll eat them if I cook them in curry.

Does your DD eat fruits?  DS likes fruits and he'll eat his favorites even on his pickiest days (eg, banana, peaches, cantaloupe, watermelon).  So on days he doesn't want to eat anything else, I'll let him eat fruits after he throws everything else on the floor.

I've also found that if DS refuses one food several days in a row, it's best to refrain from that food for a week or 2, then reintroduce it.  I have tried getting him to eat beets for months, and one day, he decided he'd eat them!

I also refuse to be a short-order cook.  DS gets the same foods as we do at dinner.  If he doesn't want to eat anything, so be it.  He'll get fruit when we're done, but I'm not going to fix him something else just because he refuses to eat what I had made.

  • We're going through the same thing! This phase is lasting a lot longer than I had hoped. She used to LOVE chopped veggies and we ended up having to resort to pureed veggies again because she wasn't getting any at all. The only other way I can get her to eat them is mixing them up with applesauce and feeding them to her with a spoon. She loves to feed herself everything else, but I have also picked up that she liked things she can takes bites out of like a whole Ritz cracker or a Nutra Grain bar. I still chop up her fruits but she definitely prefers anything she can hold and bite pieces off of.
  • My son did the same. Sometimes, I'll give him what he doesn't like first. He will sit there waiting for something else, if he is hungry enough he will eat it. Other times he will be stubborn and just sit there waiting for something different
