Puffs - when do you give them?

Just curious about this -- the box of puffs (the disolvable cereal thingies), says to use when baby is crawling with stomach off ground, has a pincer grip, etc.

Well, LO is not crawling but he's starting to use his pincer.  I picked up a cannister of these to have on hand if/when the time is right, just wondering if any of you are using them yet or if you are an STM when you started with your other children.

I thought it might help him with his hand stuff, but I don't want to give it to him if it is too early and he might choke or something.

  • I think we did Cheerios around 6-7 months and puffs are pretty similar so probably could try them. They are sticky though, so fair warning of sticky fingers!

  • I just bought some last week and gave my daughter some when she was in her high chair. She mostly played with them but she did manage to put one in her mouth and it dissolves so quickly no need to worry about choking. But they are sticky!

  • My pedi said at our 6 month appt we can start giving them to her now if we wanted to

  • We give them. It keeps him busy enough that I can eat my dinner while it's still hot

I don't really know either, but that is what it says on the label-- I'm assuming they're just tying it to a developmental stage.

Thanks ladies-- I might try some tonight while he's in his high chair!

Yes, it's definitely tied to a developmental stage.  Age is kind of arbitrary, but signs of certain development are pretty clear.  That said, my son had puffs before he could crawl because he was ready in other aspects (eg - pincer grip).  They do dissolve easily so not bad to try.  My girls don't quite seem ready yet, but probably in the next month or so.  I have some ready to give when it happens.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Ginny started eating puffs and Cheerios this past week. It's good practice for picking things up and moving food around their mouth.

  • We bought puffs this week and he loves them.
  • He tried a few tonight and enjoyed them, but couldn't really figure out how to pick them up and put them in his mouth -- but the ones I put in his mouth he enjoyed!

  • I noticed he will try to pick up puree with his pincer grasp so its probably time for little finger foods!

  • I gave LO a sweet potato puff last night and she definitely gagged on it. took about 3 years off my life. I think I am going to start breaking them in half until she gets used to eating them

I break them in half for my daughter too. It's much easier for her to eat it that way
