Talk to me about tantrums and talking!
More out of curiosity, but how do you handle it when your toddler pitches a tantrum? How does it differ when your out in public verses at home?
And, more out of concern.. How did you get you LO to start talking? DS1 says very few words.. Mama, baba, vroom and on very few occasions (like maybe 3x each, ever) yum, dada, and popop. For the life of me I can not get this kid to say a word on command. Most of the talking I've heard is when he's alone in his crib.. The more I provoke him to talk, the less he says around me! Stubborn!!! He understands me though.. I can ask him to bring me something or go put something away and he will do it.. He just chooses not to talk.. He's almost 15 months.
Thanks

Re: Toddler Tantrums & Talking. (Julymomma)
Tantrums at home we mostly just ignore. I will ask them if they would like a hug but otherwise let them roll around. We haven't had any in public yet but I will probably take the same course. I tried the Happiest Toddler on the Block method but it makes things worse for us.

Our tantrums are often over similar things.. not listening is a big one! I'm very secure in my decision to ignore him, exactly for the reason you said -- I am not reinforcing his poor behavior by giving in to him.. but, in public, it's so much harder to be confident in that decision when there are other people "judging" me! Before I had my own kids, if I saw a kid throwing a tantrum in public I often would think "aww, that poor kid is pitching a fit".. but, now as a Mom, I think, "aww, that poor Momma!!" LOL
