Toddler Tantrums & Talking. (Julymomma)

Talk to me about tantrums and talking! More out of curiosity, but how do you handle it when your toddler pitches a tantrum? How does it differ when your out in public verses at home? And, more out of concern.. How did you get you LO to start talking? DS1 says very few words.. Mama, baba, vroom and on very few occasions (like maybe 3x each, ever) yum, dada, and popop. For the life of me I can not get this kid to say a word on command. Most of the talking I've heard is when he's alone in his crib.. The more I provoke him to talk, the less he says around me! Stubborn!!! He understands me though.. I can ask him to bring me something or go put something away and he will do it.. He just chooses not to talk.. He's almost 15 months. Thanks =)

Re: Toddler Tantrums & Talking. (Julymomma)

  • That sounds pretty typical for a 15m old! I think they want kids to have 5 words at 15m and 15 words by 18m. I'm sure someone can chime in to verify if that's right. We read lots and sing songs. We're also doing sign language. S is very advanced in speech but J is delayed even for adjusted age so we will likely do speech therapy soon. You can do a google search and find lots of websites with helpful ideas to encourage speech.

Tantrums at home we mostly just ignore. I will ask them if they would like a hug but otherwise let them roll around. We haven't had any in public yet but I will probably take the same course. I tried the Happiest Toddler on the Block method but it makes things worse for us.

  • I ignore as well.. Or, I will take him up to his crib for a nap if he's really being ridiculous., when in public (I've had some because he hates being in the stroller, but needs to learn!!) and I will calmly say calm down, stop crying, you are not getting out.. What annoys me is when outsiders Feed into his fit!! It's happened on 2 occasions and I almost want to say please STOP your making things worse!! Argh! Lol

Sometimes I wonder why people feel they need to enter their 2 cents. I would kindly say you aren't making the matter better. I haven't hit this stage yet but I am sending you lots of patience. Jackson starting on fits and I ignore him. I know he does it for attention because he's only doing it when he's not getting my undivided attention.

  • andrea ri 80 Thanks!  It is hard.. I see so many kids younger than my DS with more verbal communication!  He's just so stubborn!! I casually asked the ped about speech at DS2s 2mo appointment (so DS1 was 14mos), and she said I just need to be better at telling him to use his words.. but, no matter how many times I stress it, he refuses!  I've even tried not giving in to him until he says "up", "down", or "more" and it was useless... just turned into an absolute screaming fit or, he'd give up and go do something else! There's no doubt in my mind he could talk if he wants to, but he just doesn't!

Our tantrums are often over similar things.. not listening is a big one!  I'm very secure in my decision to ignore him, exactly for the reason you said -- I am not reinforcing his poor behavior by giving in to him.. but, in public, it's so much harder to be confident in that decision when there are other people "judging" me!  Before I had my own kids, if I saw a kid throwing a tantrum in public I often would think "aww, that poor kid is pitching a fit".. but, now as a Mom, I think, "aww, that poor Momma!!" LOL

  • At 15 months I talked to her as much as possible. Labeled things throughout the day, didn't worry too much about if she could repeat them. Somewhere between 19 -20 months her language exploded and we couldn't keep up with all the new words. She is now almost two and puts together sentences of 4-5 words. It's crazy how fast they learn. He sounds right on track. And you are right, they do understand more than what they can communicate back to us. And as for tantrums... Oh boy they are only getting worse for us. We have started time outs on a regular basis because she needs the time to chill out.
