Rattling noise when breathing

DD is 9 months old and teething. Today I noticed she has a little rattle when she breathes, sometimes. Its not all the time but when she does it, it is noticeable. She has a little runny nose but the doctor said that can happen when teething. (Shes had that awhile and its not thick, yellow or interfering with her breathing) She has no fever, decrease of fluids or foods and is sleeping fine. I know most doctors don't give medicine for just a regular cold, so it's this something I should take her to the doctor for or should I wait it out? TIA!!

Re: Rattling noise when breathing

  • My LO is teething and had this too. Excess drool and mucus from teething gets stuck in his throat and it rattles around. As long as your LO coughs to clear it every so often and is otherwise breathing normally, I wouldn't really worry about it.
My LO progressed to an all out hacking cough over the course of a few days. Hopefully your LO avoids this, but our doctor says it's pretty common with teething.

Is she retracting when breathing, sort of sucking the chest in, is her nostrils flaring or any other indication of an issue breathing?

I would error on the side of caution with breathing issues and take her in.

Nope nothing that indicates an issue with her breathing. And like I said its not all the time, maybe once a day, twice at the most. She doesn't seem to notice it either.

  • I would call the nurse line/ pedi or take her in. Better to be safe!
