Babies: 6 - 9 Months

how long is your LO awake in between naps?

I was thinking that DD will lengthen her awake time but it's been the same for the last 2 months and I am wondering when I can expect to see the awake time lengthen.

DD is 6.5 months now. Currently she is clearly done after an hour to 1.5 hour from the time she wakes up in the morning. It doesn't matter if it's been a good night (no middle of the night wakings) or bad night, she's done after 1  hour. She starts rubbing her eyes and fusses and as soon as I put her back in the crib she's out within minutes. So it seems like by the time we get up, get dressed, nurse, pretty soon after she's due for a nap. Is this normal?

Then between nap 1 and nap 2, she lasts 2 hours. She also lasts 2 hours between naps 2 and 3.  Between nap 3 and bedtime, she lasts 2 sometimes 2.5 hours.

How old is your LO and how long do they stay awake between naps? When did the awake time lengthen for your LO?

  • my 6 month old is napping just like yours...  first nap is an hour after wake-up, then max wake time is about 1.5-2 hours the rest of the day. She is napping 4 times a day still one days where she takes short naps!

  • DD is almost 9 months and she's up 2.5-3 hours between naps, she's always been about the same.
  • My LO is 7 months old and her morning awake time is the shortest it has been in months. At about 6 months she started staying up for about 3 hours between naps and had cut out her third nap. Over the past week and a half she giving her tired signs around and hour to an hour and a half after waking up. Honestly, she tends to play in her crib for a while so Im not sure what time she wakes up. Sometimes I walk in to check on her during a nap and see is sitting up wide awake doing who knows what. (I don't leave anything in her crib to play with) I don't know if her awake time has decreased in the morning or if she just isn't making enough noise to wake me up right when she gets up. She also isn't napping as long as she used to. I was getting a good two hours twice a day and then a shorter one somewhere in there. Now she barely makes it to an hour at a time. She has been pulling herself to standing for a while now but she just started cruising. This might be why her naps are shorter which is making her more tired. Im just glad her nighttime sleep isn't effected.

  • My lo just turn 6 months. His wake time is 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours the rest of the day. He just dropped his 3rd nap, that was when his waketime increased and naps lengthened. I'm sure he'll change again Soon. Everytime I think he has a schedule, he changes it on me haha...
  • My DD is 8.5 months and she goes down for her first nap 3-4 hours after waking. It lasts 2-3 hours and then she doesn't have another nap anymore. She dropped the second one around 7.5 mths ands it's awesome. She will sometimes take a short catnap in the car if we are out but that's it. She goes to bed at 7:30-8pmand wakes at 7:30-8pm with no MOTN wake ups ever.

  • DS is almost 8 months and 1 hour and 15 minutes after waking he has a one hour nap. The he is up for two hours, max two and a half, then sleeps for 2 hours. Then he is up until his 7pm bed time. He is the same whether it's a good night or bad night.

  • DS is 7 months, and is awake for no more than 1.5 hours- 2 if we're doing something active, or it's late in the day. His first couple naps are usually about 2 hours each (1.5 hours awake in between), and then vary between about an hour to the minimum of a half hour. If things don't go well, he sometimes skips his last nap of the day, but by that point, it doesn't matter too much. He usually goes to bed sometime between 730 and 830pm, and is up like clockwork by 630am. He's been STTN since 3 months, but will occasionally wake up randomly to feed. None of this has really changed since he started STTN...

  • What's a nap?

Baby has fought naps since 3 months old and I'm going nuts. One of the reasons I never come on this site is because I cannot take other mothers' and their nappers! ;)

  • Finally! A broken nap family!

Yeah, not enough naps here to establish a pattern and say "Oh he's awake from here to there and then he sleeps!".

He does STTN and has since he was 8 weeks though. 8-12 hours a night. Every night. Blessed!

Take that, mothers of nappers who are able to maintain their homes while their nappers nap. ;)

  • I'm glad to hear there are a couple other kids who are all over the place with naps!  I couldn't even begin to establish a pattern...she does nap at least twice each day, but that can be anywhere from a 10 minute to a 2 hour nap.  She used to sleep great at night, but lately that is going to hell too.  What happened to my awesome sleeper?? :(

:) You're funny! I feel the same way about mothers who have kids who eat so well. I see all these posts on eating/feeding where moms are like "my kid is 6 months eats 3 meals, 3 oz each and x amount in milk.." I'm like "wow I feel like it's a good day when DD takes 2 baby spoons of anything. Or nurses good for that matter."
DD's sleep is all over the place now so I don't have a pattern there either. She's been waking up 3-4 times in the last week....momma is so exhausted.
  • I'm a little jealous of those of you who who still have long-napping babies. My little one is eight months and seems to just fight his sleep. If he does nap it's usually for a minimal ten minutes. Twenty on a good day, but then he's right back up, and rearing to go go go! It's insanity. He's had many days that he's refused to nap whatsoever.

  • Hahaha! Regular nap times...what are those? Some days our DD2 sleeps for an hour the whole day!

  • My LO is 6.5 months and has the exact same sleeping pattern. I read a book a while ago Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby by Dr. Marc Weissbluth that was very helpful. He states that after 2 hrs of being awake most babies are ready for their next nap. This helped me tremendously in the beginning. Unfortunately you become a time keeper. But fortunate for your child they will eventually establish great sleep habits. Good luck!
  • He's 5 months & I put him down for naps every 2 hours. For bed, 3-4 hours after he wakes from last nap
  • My LO sleeps great at night. She'll wake up once or twice to feed, but I can put her right back into her crib and she'll fall asleep on her own. Naps are another story. She's clearly tired but fights falling asleep. And they're short, maybe 30 minutes. If she sleeps longer than 45 minutes, it makes me think something is wrong lol. She typically takes 3 naps per day and starts showing signs of tiredness within 2 hours of last waking.
