1st Trimester

Anyone experience diarrhea instead of constipation in the first trimester?

I have been struggling with this since I found out I was pregnant. I've been to my doctor, took stool samples, etc. and everything was fine. I'm just so frustrated because I don't know what to do. I've done the BRAT diet, that doesn't help. Maybe this is my morning sickness?

Re: Anyone experience diarrhea instead of constipation in the first trimester?

  • For the first couple of weeks I definitely did.  I remember seeing all the constipation posts thinking there was something wrong with me because I had the exact opposite problem.  I guess now I'm kind of back to normal/maybe slightly constipated.

  • I have the same problem! I am taking metformin, which definitely has GI side effects, but it seems to be worse ever since I got my BFP. I just keep drinking tons of water.

  • I am!  For about the last week and a half straight, every day.  Not so much fun :(

  • I have the exact same issue! I mentioned it to the doctor yesterday and she said it's pretty normal...I guess people just don't talk about it as much!

  • in my last pregnancy it lasted throughout the entire pregnancy and it has already started with this pregnancy
  • It's been back and forth for me.  I'm constipated for a few days, then normal, then diarrhea the next.  Repeat.  Fun stuff, I say!  Wink

  • It's actually how I found out! Stomach flu was going around DH's family, and I thought I had caught it too. I had diarrhea and my stomach was upset, but it only lasted a couple days while everyone else was sick for a week. So I took a HPT to see and it was positive (I was 6 weeks according to LMP). I was flabbergasted! I suppose it still COULD have been stomach flu, I guess I'll never know for sure! It has now transitioned into mild constipation though...lol

  • Yep I have had diarrhea and loose stools since a couple days before i found out so it's been over 2 weeks now.  Not much to do but continue to drink fluids
  • Yup.  It struck me yesterday.

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids so you don't get dehydrated and make the situation worst.

  • The first few weeks I had diarrhea all the time. After that I had normal BMs. I didn't have my first real "constipation" until the other day and it was so bad I ended up staying home from work because I was in so much pain and couldn't get anything out Embarrassed

  • lurking from 3rd tri...

Totally. I had diarrhea until about 2 months and then like a light switch it changed to constipation for about 3 months!

Finally, when I got to 3rd Tri things improved greatly.

  • Yes!  I've actually been considering posting the same question.  It's usually only after dinner and it's random days.  Kind of like someone else said, constipated for a few days, normal, then diarrhea.  I never know what I'm going to get.  It sucks!  The nights I get diarrhea, my nausea is worse too.  Not sure if it's hormone surges, or being more tired that day or what.

  • ME! But I know why! My anxiety causes me to get an upset stomach. I usually take Xanax and that cures the problem. Well now that I'm preggo, I can't take it. So any excitement causes me to get it. So I either have an upset stomach or I'm constipated lol. My doctor approved Imodium and said its safe for pregnancy. Works well for me.
  • I did before I got my positive and a few weeks after. Now I poop once a day, morning. Maybe able to get a tiny one out if I eat fast food or protein.

    It's a BOY

  • Yes! In the mornings I run to the toilet! Ah, it makes for a scary commute. Today was a good day, so I hope it goes away. My doctor said Immodium is class B but Mayo Clinic's Guide says it's a no in the first tri.

  • Try adding a fiber supplement to your diet.  I had to do that my first pregnancy as I was stuck between diarrhea and constipation the entire time. Once I added that in (I got the kind that dissolves in anything and had it in my tea each morning), things improved a whole lot.
