Gemma Ann Lee - Thoughts?

What are your thoughts on this name? I have loved Gemma for years now and would love to use it if we have a girl.

Does Gemma Lee sound okay? I think it is fine but curious what an outsider may think :)

TIA!

Re: Gemma Ann Lee - Thoughts?

  • Love Gemma. Love it!  Is Lee the middle name or last name? I'm confused because your title is Gemma Ann Lee.  As a fn/ln combo, I like Gemma Lee.  If Ann is supposed to be the middle name, I'm not crazy about the one syllable mn and one syllable ln.  I know they won't be said together a lot (unless youplan to call her Gemma Ann), but it sounds awkward to me.  I think a two or three syllable mn flows better - e.g., Gemma Louise Lee or Gemma Elizabeth Lee.

  • I think Gemma Lee is lovely.

If you are using both Ann and Lee as middles, I do think Gemma Ann runs together a bit, but it's not awful.

Won't let me edit so I'm quoting myself.  Just realized my example of Elizabeth is four syllables.  So, basically, I think anything more than an one syllable mn flows better.

  • Yes Lee is my last name. Sorry! I probably should have clarified that :)

The reason I would like to use Ann as a middle name is because it is such a big name in our family. But I do get that two short names in a row can be confusing.

I am glad to hear the general response is that Gemma Lee (FN/LN) goes okay together. That is what I was hoping to hear :)

  • I like the name Gemma but when I say the two names together it keeps coming out Gemmaly as if its one name. I like some of pp's suggestions of Gemma Elizabeth  Lee.

  • Love Gemma but don't like it with Ann and Lee.
  • I love Gemma a lot and I think it goes great with your other childrens names.  I also agree that you need a longer mn.  My suggestions: Renee (my fav sounding), Beatrice, Christine, April.

  • I love love Gemma, and mn Ann sounds nice with it. And fn/ln combo of Gemma Lee sounds nice as well.

I think it's kind of funny--for lack of better word--that people would think it is pronounced with a soft g, even though I hear that a lot. With the soft g it's so ugly sounding, lol.

This name is NOT pronounced with a hard G.  It's Gemma with a soft G, like George or giraffe.

  • I think when there is an purposeful stop in between Gemma and Lee it sounds great, however if you say it fast it does sound like "Gemily", as in Emily with a G at the beginning. I don't think it is a big enough reason to not use Gemma, though. :)
  • I looked up online and found a pronounciation guide of "JEH-muh". Much better than the mumbled "give-me" like sound which was my initial read on it when I first saw it on the bump. I'd never encountered it before (or since) this board.

I like Jenna better, because the pronunciation is clearer with the "J" first letter. Not suggesting by this you change the spelling of Gemma; I'm not for changing traditional spellings. But the unclear pronunciation and sound of it (even knowing its the much better JEH-muh) make it NMS.

  • I thought barbie had a little sister Gemma? And there used to be a cartoon about Gemma the rock star or something. I thought everyone knew the name Gemma but maybe that's just in Australia.

That is my hang up! I tend to over think things though. Thank you :)

    Jem & the Holgrams!

I don't think she was affiliated with Barbie, but there was a cartoon and dolls.
