Tubes for LO

Our pediatrician recommended we see a pediatric ENT because DS has had several ear infections in his first year, and has had fluid in his ears at many of our visits.  The pediatrician thought that tubes may be in our future.  I hate the idea of putting LO under, and I tend to like to do whatever we can to treat issues before opting for something more invasive.  But at the same time I don't want to mess with LO's ears, and his hearing and cause speech delays.  Tell me your experiences/views on tubes for LO.

Re: Tubes for LO

  • DS got tubes in August when he was not quite 11 months  I wasn't against the tubes because I was tired of the ear infections and the antibiotics.  Plus, when I asked around I heard only positives from people who had experience with it.  It was really not bad at all.  The procedure took about 15 minutes and I got to hold him as they put him under (I cried a bit but not too bad).  We were back with him as soon as he woke up.  He was a bit upset but I nursed him and he was back to normal by the time we got home.  Honestly, the worst part was not being able to feed him before the surgery.  If your child is really struggling with infections I would go ahead with the tubes.  Our ENT said the fluid in their ears feels like they are under water and that feeling when you need to pop your ears.  I wouldn't leave my kid feeling that way.  Good luck!

  • My son also had tubes at 11 months (March 2013).  He had constant fluid in his ears for several months, as well as a number of ear infections.  Our ENT did not immediately jump to tubes.  We were sent for a hearing test and he also let us decide if we wanted to wait a month and see if the fluid would drain on its own.  We did that but the fluid did not drain.  The hearing test indicated some mild issues with hearing and our ENT also stated that the feeling of constant fluid in the ears would drive us adults  crazy.  Even without infections, my son was often up at night crying and miserable.  After the tubes, his personality truly changed, so I know it was the right thing for us.  I didn't want to put him under either, but it was all OK in the end.  I would say, meet with the ENT and at least find out their suggestions.  It does not necessarily mean tubes will be recommended.
  • DD had tubes put in at 9 months and then zero ear issues all the way until this week. SO worth it and I would do it again. Several friends told me if they ever rec tubes, don't question and jump on it, so we did. Now at 20 months one tube is growing out and a simple cold turned into a nasty ear infection that has resulted in weeks of miserableness for poor LO which again confirms how great the tubes are IMO.

  • My opinion, do it! Ear infections are painful!! and can have long lasting effects. Personally, tubes worked great for me, my brother and both my niece and nephew.

  • Thanks everyone!  We'll see what the ENT says next week.  I am feeling more comfortable with the idea of tubes. I would love to be ear infection free this winter.  LO is in daycare and seems to catch all the germs.
