November 2013 Moms

How far past EDD?

So I know most practitioners now won't let a pregnancy go past 42ish weeks. But back in the day that wasn't always the case. So who do you know that has gone the longest and how long did they carry?

I'm hoping these numbers will make me feel better when I am overdue and over it in a few weeks:)

Re: How far past EDD?

  • My great aunt carried to 44 weeks and the last month she walked around at 5cm dilated, poor thing!

  • Around here (British columbia) they induce you after being 10 days overdue. You start running into problems like placental insufficiancy, possible meconium in the amniotic fluid and a bigger baby when you go too far past your due date.
  • I'm a late ovulatory so for a spontaneous conception would expect to be overdue 1 week based on LMP.  Then with a FT birth, I'd expect up to another week, so at least 2 weeks late as completely normal.  (But IRL medical procedures and DH's genetics made both points moot.)

  • I was almost 4 weeks late, but now many states won't let you go more than 42 weeks.  I know in my state your OB/MW has to begin induction procedures if you aren't in labor by the day you turn 42 weeks.  I'm not sure if the rule comes from their malpractice insurance, state law, or some medical board rules, but my MW said although she's had patients she felt comfortable letting go a couple days past 42 weeks, she has to start the induction on 42 weeks if I'm not in labor by then--- but we won't talk about that until 41 weeks anyway.

  • I was 5 weeks late. Due in Jan.2 born in Feb.9. There wasn't a dating issue either because my mom got her BFP in early April. Thank god my office won't let you go more than 42 weeks!

  • Some of these stories about people being a month late are kind of terrifying to think about!  My Mom was due to have me 11/28 and I was born on 12/07 so I guess I was about 9 days late.  My practice doesn't like to let you go more than a week overdue.

They didn't have the dating technology we have now - so they probably made the assumption that everyone had 28d cycles.  For late ovulators (like me) I probably would have been one of those super late individuals.  With DD I ovulated at CD22/23 and DD came 10 days late - which is like 3.5w after the "traditional" dating mechanisms.  So I kind of always take these stories with a grain of salt.

That makes sense!  All I could think of was seeing someone walking around truly an extra month pregnant and how much that would probably suck....  I apparently still need to wake up this morning!
  • My mom had endometriosis (I don't know if that would've made her cycles longer), and my EDD was 8\10.  I was born 8\31 via c-section because apparently, I didn' t want to come out.  ;)

    I went to 42w3d with my first before I scheduled a c-section.  I didn't give DS2 the chance -- scheduled my RCS at 39w.

With this one, I'll get to go to 42 weeks.

You'll want to discuss this with your OB.  The placenta has a shelf-life.  If you're pushing 42 weeks, it's a good idea to have a plan for regular monitoring in place.  You should do some research on the longevity and vitality of the placenta, so that YOU have an idea how long you're comfortable going without induction or c-section.  Your doc should also have a say, but having some information in your corner will only help you be the best advocate for your pregnancy in this regard.

  • My mom told me I was due late Feb ...my birthday is april 10th....

  • I had DD1 6 days past my due date becuase of a medical condition (emer c/s). I was scheduled to be induced the next day. My office induces at 41 weeks.

This repeat c/s will occur at 39 weeks

  • My coworker went 3 weeks over with her son and says he was doing tummy time from birth and walked and could kick and throw a ball way early. She says he was overdone for sure.

My mom went 2 weeks over with my sister and I both. I'm trying not to think about that factoid much.

  • I went 14 days over with both of my first two kids. I'm sure hoping this LO decides not to stick  around in there for that long!

  • My MIL swears DH was due mid January. His birthday is March 10. I think she must have miscalculated, he was also only 6 pounds.
  • My sis was due feb 5 but didn't come until by emergency csection feb 24. She was a big baby! I was a scheduled c section.

I made sure to choose a midwife that would allow me to go 2 weeks over my due date. DD1 came 8 days late.
  • I'm not a fan of docs that only allow one week past due date until they induce. That does not seem very flexible or knowledgable about the possibility of ovulating late.
