NBR: Need Advice - Would you go?

DH and I have had an overnight (really just a 24 hr vacation) planned for over 3 months.  We are heading about 3.5 hours away to go Whitewater Rafting Saturday morning and then coming home..would be home by dinner Saturday.  DS had a fall at day care yesterday and banged up his elbow. Nothing major, we thought it was nurse maid elbow at first but the ped couldn't get it to reduce so she sent us to ortho this morning for a follow up - he has to wear a little splint over the weekend so he doesn't overuse it and so it can heal.  He's also on antibiotics for a little ear infection...Question...is this too much to leave my parents to deal with for 24 hours - 12 of which he will be sleeping?  We can get a raincheck for the trip - but lose 25% ..I asked my mom if she wanted us to cancel and she said it's up to us..which in my mom's language mean she thinks we should...what would you do??

  • Note - DS is 15 months and this would be the first time for both of us to be away from home at the same time.

  • I think it depends on how DS is doing. If he's fussy or not acting like himself from either the ear infection or his elbow, it might not be the best time to take a trip. But if he's doing okay, I would think it shouldn't be a big deal.

  • It depends on how comfortable you are with your mom handling him in this situation. My mom is a nurse so I am fully confident in her watching my kids when they are sick, she even takes them to the pedi for me. My kids are also very attached to my mom so they don't seem to miss us at all when we're away. Personally I would still go.

  • The ear infection didn't seem to faze him at all..the only reason I even knew he had one was because he had his 15 month appt and the pedi saw a little fluid in his ear -- he said he couldn't tell if it was coming or going but went ahead to treat it anyway to get it cleared up...As far as the elbow goes he was acting completely like himself even this morning still.
  • Based on your follow up I would still go.  Neither of those sound like a big deal to me, since he does not seem to be bothered by them.

  • I would still go.  It doesn't sound like you'll be gone for very long- as long as your mom is up for it, shouldn't be a problem.
  • I would definitely go. My mom raised three kids ... she can handle a little elbow sprain and ear fluid.

    This exactly.

  • Yes, go. Your mom is a mom-she's experienced this before. It's 24 hrs not a long period of time. Go! Guilt free...Enjoy!

  • Update - We went, all was fine, his arm was much better before we left and we had a blast!
