Bfing issue

Breast feeding has been going very well for my guys, but I think I've got a bit of an oversupply issue, with perhaps a forceful letdown on top of it. I know how to fix this with a singleton- block feed. I did this for ds1. How in the world do I do that with twins? Anyone have any insight?

Re: Bfing issue

  • Oh boy, I didn't even know there was a way to fix this.  I just let the girls choke and gag and spit-up:)

  • Haha! Well, I wouldn't worry too much about it, but my one boy has bad reflux that I think is exacerbated by this and the other has green, frothy poop.

  • I had this problem (oversupply plus forceful letdown). I had no clue how to fix it. I just let them nurse. If it had been a while (DH and I did shifts in the beginning so he bottle fed during his time) I would pump a bit first, then latch them. Seemed to help a bit till my oversupply went away.

  • Thanks! When did you see a difference?

  • With my singleton I had a pretty foreceful let down in the beginning and she was pretty small and struggled with breastfeeding...the best way to help with that was to nurse while lying down completely on my back, in bed (I obviously couldn't do it all the time) when I could. Gravity would then help a bit with the let down.

Not much advice for the oversupply - good luck, though. Hope it works out for you. So great to hear BF is going so well for you.

  • Yeah, I did the same thing (reclined bfing) with ds1, but it doesn't really work with tandem nursing, which if I don't do I might lose my mind! This is so confusing with twins sometimes!

  • My letdown is pretty forceful and I have a refluxy one too. I can't see how old your LOs are but mine are 3mo and are just getting the hang of the flow. There's still copious amounts if spit up though.

I had the same issue w my first and he got the hang of the fast flow at around 2mo.

  • I had this same issue in the beginning and found that pumping for 5-10 minutes before I nursed them really helped. It also helped me build up a freezer supply which was an added bonus! I'm sure adding one more thing to the list of stuff to do doesn't seem very appealing but it really did help. GOOD LUCK!

  • The book "Mothering Multiples" has some info on this.
  • Thanks ladies! I might try pumping a bit beforehand and see if that helps.
