Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Formula re-use question

We are doing more supplementing with formula than I did with my other kids. If DD drinks half a bottle, can I put it in the fridge and re-use it later? Officially the answer is likely no, but do you do this and is it okay? We have re-used baby food before. TIA.

  • If it under an hour old, then yes. If not, then no.

  • DS is too nosy anymore to finish all 7 ounces of his bottle in one sitting, so I always put what he doesn't drink in the fridge right away for him to finish later. We've never had any problems.
  • The official answer is no because bacteria enters the bottle and multiplies fast.

  • The official answer is not more than an hour, but by 9-12 months, it should be fine. How many times have you drank from a soda bottle then let it sit for hours and finished drinking it later? He or she will be fine letting it go for a handful of hours, especially refrigerated.

  • Unlike soda, the pH of formula causes it to be much more susceptible to bacteria growth.

This, I do it all the time and have never had an issue. It's fine....

My son is on Alimentum and it is WAY to expensive to throw out what he doesn't drink in one sitting. DS has never had even the slightest sickness, so I'm saving it! :)

Exactly. When DS was on Elecare there was no way I was throwing that stuff out! I just stuck it in the fridge and busted it out later. DS and DD drank cold bottles all the time with no qualms.

  • No. I'd rather waste formula than make my babies sick.

  • Yeah. That's gross guys. It's the equivalent of taking a glass of milk you started drinking, letting it sit, get backwashed in, then stuck in the fridge so you can drink it later. Ew. You guys don't drink from the carton do you? Plus is rather my kid not get sick.

  • Yep, we FF and as long as the bottle isn't more than an hour old, I'll re-use. Anything after that, I'll dump and make a new one.
