Infertility

really worried, could use some responses....

Hi Ladies,

I am just getting ready to start IVF, our mock and injection class is scheduled for Oct. 14th. (If our loan goes through :( which is a whole other story and a whole other stress!

Of course I've started my prenatal multivitamin and a round of birth control. Of course before trying, I had been on birth control for years and years with no problems. Even though I've always been a petite person and had to be careful about eating and that sort of thing I've never had anything like a seizure and I had one today. We were at a graveside service, we had been standing a while in the hot sun and it was getting close to lunch time. I wouldn't be concerned if it had just been a fainting spell but one of our family members there is a nurse and she said it was definitely a seizure because of the way I tensed up, arched my back, moaned and had my eyes open the whole time. Very scary!! The only difference lately is starting that birth control but that has been almost a week.

Really my question to everyone was, has anyone had any major adverse reactions to their medications? Gosh, if this did have something to do with the birth control, how am I ever going to be able to handle all of the injections?? Really concerned, any responses would be a great help (and maybe give me a little peace)...thanks so much in advance!! Don't know what I would do without a place like this to share!

Yes I agree with PP things like this need to be taken up with a DR. We are here to support you but that is something a little more serious. Hope everything works out.
  • I've never had adverse side effects to birth control and only had minor side efects from the last round of injections I did with ivf. You should really take your concerns to your doctor because at the least, you should be monitored a little more closely.

  • You should contact your doctor. Heat can cause seizures; however since this is a new issue it should be addressed with an MD straight away.

@Holly&Troy - I have epilepsy that wasn't diagnosed until 2008 (age 26). My diagnosis came after being carried out of work on a stretcher - yikes! Had never had a seizure my whole life. Started meds after seeing a neurologist for the first time. Thought all was good and then wham a second seizure 2 years later - this time an ambulance ride from my home (& a DH scared out of his mind). Please I hope you'll seek out care from a neuro specialist, b/c trust me, it can happen out of nowhere at any age, with no warning. My RE is well aware of my epilepsy & my meds and has never been concerned about interactions or side effects. Same from my neurologist - she knows all about my IF stuff & said not to worry. I hope you find answers & comfort soon!

BTW, PM me anytime you need an ear!

  • Definitely tell/ask your dr, asap!
  • @cachoque, I hope this isn't too personal but I was wondering what meds you take for your seizures? I take tegretol which is an anti seizure med but I take it for other reasons like helping prevent a neuropathy pain. I'm asking bc I'm wondering how this effects IVF. I know I'll be considered a high risk pregnancy because of the med but I'm just concerned how it may be effecting the IVF process. Do you have any idea? Another question ill be going over again at my WTF appt. of course I'm beating myself up with what could've gone wrong.

  • @holly&troy, I'm so sorry to hear this! As if you don't have enough going on as it is. I agree with the other ladies...contact your dr..even if it means after hours. Your health is a priority. I really hope you figure everything out and that you are well on your way through IVF....goodluck!

  • Thanks everyone, yes, I am definitely speaking with my dr. and have an appt. tomorrow and also emailed my fertility nurse. Just wondered what kind of side effects if any, anyone else has had. Thank you!!!
  • I don't want to freak you out with my story but if they check everything out and it comes up clean maybe see if the DR can check out your heart. I hate seizures so much, I really hope it was just heat/stress and nothing overly serious. GL sending some prayers your way

@TaylorH84 I'm on Lamictal. I looked it up on WebMD and Tegrital & Lamictal look to be in the same C class for pregnancy risk. Are you taking extra folic acid? That was the main thing my neuro insisted on - bc the med affects iron absorption. I wish I could say what the impact of the meds are on IVF but both my docs insist that there's nothing to worry about. I worry a lot bc we're unexplained & I'm always desperate for a reason. Medicine (& epilepsy) are always a convenient excuse to me. I try not to worry about it too much and, then again, i have yet to find a study or paper stating epilepsy or anti-seizure drugs have anything to do with IF or IVF/FET outcomes. What have you heard/read if anything?

  • I haven't had any really bad side effects to any medications that I have had as of yet..you should definitely talk to your doctor
  • @cachoque, thanks for the info! I've only heard the same things and feel the same as you. I knew it was a med they would prefer for me not to be on but they also said that it just meant I would be monitored more closely and would definitely be seeing a high risk dr. So far it seems like its just being brushed off but I still have this feeling of wanting to constantly remind them that I'm on it. I too, immediately thought of it when I got the BFN. I wasn't aware of needing extra folic acid, so thanks for letting me know. I don't know why I still worry over it when my doctors don't seem to....thanks again and I really hope things work out for you!
