NWMR: Lasik

Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world to have NOT done this yet! I'm thinking it's about time, I've been talking about it for years and just never gotten around to it. So, what do I need to know before I stay comparing places, and prices?

Re: NWMR: Lasik

  • I had it done probably 10 years now. Life changing for me. Do you have an eye doctor that you could ask for recommendations? That's what I would do. Or ask around to other people. I asked several people when I had mine done and they all had the same doctor and so I figured he must be good. He had performed something like 20,000 procedures or some crazy number. Go based off reputation, not price. Also, having it done is super easy. No painful, just a little weird, and so easy.

  • My DH had it done, but I'm planning to wait until 6 months after I'm done nursing my last baby. I was reading about hormonal changes affecting vision and doctors advising to not do the procedure too close (before or after) to pregnancy and nursing. I've been either pregnant or nursing for all but a few months of the last 5+ years, so I'm still waiting. That's one issue to consider that isn't mentioned much.

  • I had it done four years ago. Best decision.

My eye doctor was a recommendation from a coworker--frat buddies decades ago.  He was always great with my annual check ups and I felt comfortable with his care.  When I decided to consider Lasik I knew that he was the best option for me. He's done a bunch of procedures and had great referrals.

Ask friends and family and check out the docs history. I wouldn't shop based off price.  Don't want to get a "bargain" eye surgery!

This (except for DH doing it), plus you have to use steroid drops after the surgery for 1-6 weeks depending on the procedure and you can't take any form of steroid while nursing or pregnant.
  • I had it done 12 years ago. Best thing I ever did for myself! I got a recommendation from our family opthamologist, and the doctor turned out to be one of the best in my area. It was pricey, but worth every penny. I'd use the best doctor, even if it cost more.

I had never heard of that.  I want to get it done but I'm waiting until we meet a few other financial goals first.  Glad to know that waiting is good since I just had DD.

  • Thanks everyone! I had heard about the pregnancy thing. But since TTC #3 seems to not be working out (been trying since Feb), I don't want to put it on hold any longer. I've been wearing contact lenses for 22 years - IT'S TIME!

I'm in this boat too, I wanted to get it done before I got pregnant with my son, but due to the finances it probably would have delayed us trying to get pregnant by a few months. I was impatient to start our family so I put off the lasik til we're done. Once I'm done being pregnant and nursing baby #2 it's ON! I, like OP, have been wearing contacts for 22 years, and glasses for 4 years before that.

  • I actually just had an issue with my eye where I developed an ulcer in it from sleeping in my contacts (they are the kind you are supposed to be able to) and after about a month of medication it is now gone but the doctor is recomending I do LASIK so that I don't have this issue again.  I just have to wait until I am done nursing.
