Stripping membranes for VBACs

I am 41w2d and have an apt tomorrow.  I am debating having my membranes stripped. I am just concerned about breaking my water as when I had it done with #1 an hour later my water broke and I had zero contractions and one thing led to another and I ended in c sec.  Anyone have any thoughts on this? I know it's my decision in the end but just curious what others would do in this situation.

Re: Stripping membranes for VBACs

  • I had mine stripped and it did not break my water. I would be cautious given your situation, but that being said, how long is your OB willing to let you go? If your OB is going to pressure you into c-section anyway in x number of days, I would get your membranes stripped the day before the scheduled c-section. That would be my strategy. My OB won't let me go past 41 weeks. I have c-section scheduled for 40+2. I will have membranes stripped at 39+2 and hope for the best.

  • She is fine with me going to 42+1 since 42 is a sunday I don't want to have something scheduled c sec wise on Friday when really all he could need is another day or two to come on his own.  Thanks for your advice. Best of luck!

  • I wouldn't, but it depends on what your doctor is like. Mine is very natural birth/vbac friendly. She knows I won't consent to induction before 42 weeks (unless there is something wrong). I plan on waiting for labor to start naturally. If it hasn't by 42 weeks I'm okay with trying the foley bulb to help, but really don't want to go through that again. [Last time I was induced with it at 41+5 b/c of no fluid and when labor didn't start they put me on pitocin right away]

  • I agree that it depends on your options. My doc and I agreed on no drug-inductions, so I was going in for a c/s at 42 weeks. I absolutely was okay with getting my membranes stripped considering surgery was my only other option. I had it done on my due date and it didn't work, I just had a lot of pain and felt like shit for a fee days. I had my baby a couple days later, thankfully, but would've done another strip at 41w if needed.
