Baby Names

Isla or Chloe?

We have a few weeks until we find out the baby's sex, but we are thinking of names. 2 girl names we like right now are Isla and Chloe.

I don't know either IRL, but I feel like Chloe is a popular name on TV. With Isla, I am worried about possible spelling/pronunciation issues.

Any thoughts?

Re: Isla or Chloe?

  • How do you want is pronounced I would says "eyes-la"
The only tv Chloe I know is kardashian so idk if it's too popular

  • For me, Chloe is a bit too cutesy. I prefer Isla. I think Isla is becoming popular enough that most people know how to pronounce it, but if they don't, no big deal. I just think it will age better than Chloe.

  • I really love Chloe and the popularity wouldn't bother me, Isla is one of the names I find beautiful on paper but loses something when spoken but a nice name nonetheless

  • I'm not a fan of the Isla craze. I dont think eye-la sounds pretty, or Isla looks pretty. And I'm frustrated with myself I still have to stop and remind myself how to pronounce it every time I see it.

    I vote Chloe

  • I am obviously biased because I have an Isla, but Chloe has always seemed very childish to me. I  just don't like it.
  • Not a fan of Chloe. Isla is beautiful :)

  • I like both. You could use both; Isla Chloe sounds nice.

  • Isla for sure! I know so many little girls named Chloe, and as PP pointed out, it's significantly more popular than Isla. I think Isla's pronunciation is really learnable, and more and more people are familiar with the name thanks to actress Isla Fischer.

  • Isla is much more appealing to me.

  • I really like Isla and Chloe is kind of meh to me. As far as Isla spelling/mispronunciation I don't think it's that big of a deal and you'll probably only having to tell people once. It's not so obscure that people won't remember IMO... I mean, people know how to pronounce island

I totally agree with this. However I am super sick of Chloe. To me it's a tie for neither but if I have to pick I guess Isla
  • I admit I pronounced Isla wrong, but like people said it's easily learned. You hear/say it once or twice and you have it. More unique than Chloe. Chloe is too popular for my taste and I agree with others I don't think it ages well.

  • I prefer Isla. I think you will run into some pronunciation issues but that's true of a lot of names. I think more people are becoming aware of the name Isla too so that should help.

  • Isla, I don't think you'll have many problems with pronunciation.
  • I like Isla. We have a little girl neighbor named Isla who is becoming DS's friend, but when I tell my family members her name they are all like "wha??".  It might be getting more popular and I think more people know it now than a few years ago, but I still think most people who aren't up on baby names won't know how to say or spell it.

  • For DD #2, we are going with Isla, so it gets my vote. DH and I are from the south so I'm sure we will get a lot of pronunciation issues, but I feel like people will catch on easy.

Chloe is cute to me, but I do hear it a lot and it's NMS.

  • I can't stand Chloe, honestly.

Isla is nice. It is ranked 230 and has risen significantly in the last few years. And more people have heard of Isla Fisher now. Just correct people if they don't get it right—not hard. "It is like island and isle."
    Agreed.
