Milk/soy allergy or possibly celiac disease?

Hi Sweet Mamas!

Does anyone have a babe with a milk/soy allergy or Celiac disease?  How did you find out?  What has your year been like?

My sweet babe has hard the HARDEST time eating from day one!  She sincerely didn't nurse well until she was about six months old.  She was "colicky" has terrible reflux and has dropped down to below the first percentile for weight.  She is irritable a lot, doesn't sleep well, but has hit every milestone and is a smart little thing.  Because she has hit milestones and doesn't appear to be in extreme discomfort, her pediatrician has assured me she is doing great... and is just a picky eater.

After two terrible months after trying whole milk and then another couple of hard weeks after trying soy milk (diarrhea, vomiting, lack of appetite at all), I have finally been able to get her to a GI.  The GI is pretty concerned and has ordered a lot of tests.

All that to say, does anyone have a similar story?  How are you doing?  How were you able to get a diagnosis?  How are you feeding your baby and your family?

  • Thanks for replying.

It has been SO confusing!  My little one's name is Annie.  My doctor (bless his heart), wasn't helpful at all with the beginning reflux/colic/possible mspi.  It was really terrible... 18 hours a day of screaming for a couple of months.  Makes me depressed just thinking about it.  After being on the highest dose of Prevacid for a few weeks and still being so irritable, I just went on a dairy/soy free diet in hopes it would help.  By the time she was about 5 months old I slowly started to add it into my diet again.  I noticed she was gassier, needed burped a LOT more, and spit up a little more than normal, but she didn't seem more irritable.

She has struggled with solids.  We have had a ton of up and downs, illness and set backs along the way.  She did eat cheese and yogurt for a few months.  She actually loved both of them.  I didn't link it at the time, but she developed a mild rash all over her back during that time too that wouldn't go away.

After starting whole milk at 12 months and getting sick from it, she sincerely won't even touch cheese or yogurt anymore.  She even stopped eating cheerios.  All that to say... before I thought she might have had an intolerance to milk, and now I am wondering if it's a full blown allergy.

I removed all casein/whey and milk completely from her diet again and the rash went away.

She has dark circles under her eyes, trouble napping (it's 4pm and she refused to nap all day), a distended tummy and she wakes in the middle of the night.

We are going to do a RAST test and Celiac Panel first.  Hopefully we can get some answers or a least guidance from the GI.  I feel like I am going crazy sometimes. ;)

  • Lola is gluten free by my choice. She doesnt have Celiacs but I know that lots of people have digestive issues due to wheat/gluten. When I get to my laptop I'll pm you some websites that helped. If it is celiacs rest assured that although eating can be a challenge but you adjust quickly! Hope you find answers soon!!!

LO was diagnosed with milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI) at 4 weeks.  Her symptoms were inconsolable crying, she barely gained weight, and had mucousy and bloody stools.  When I say blood I mean lots of blood not flecks.  Our pedi saw us ASAP and ran several tests.  She took stool samples and analyzed them for various intestinal infections, she looked for any obvious infections, and monitored LO.  I also went on a diary and soy elimination diet.  Within 4 weeks I had a new baby.  She cried less, started to gain weight, the blood was gone, and she was much happier. We re-introduced diary slowly around 10 months and LO seems to tolerate it fine now.  At 12 months I introduced almond milk to LO because I was not comfortable with cows milk based on her past.  The big thing about allergy/intolerance is that they all present differently.  I know that some MSPI baby do not have blood but more vomiting, crying, spit up.  It is can be hard to know what is going on.
It sounds like the GI doctor is on the right tract and looking for the cause of the issue. I hope they can figure out what is wrong and correct it.
