C-sections

Swollen feet

I am 5 days into my recovery for a scheduled c section. My legs are so swollen that my feet hurt me so bad. I feel like I am walking on pins and needles. They are so hard to the touch and will not go down. I can't bend my toes that's how swollen the are. Putting them up doesn't help..instead it creates more pain for me. The doctor said that swelling is normal and it should go away. Has anyone had this issue and if so how did you handle this?

Re: Swollen feet

  • Oh, it does hurt so bad.  Mine were so swollen I thought my toes would just pop off.  Broke down crying in the NICU trying to get from a chair to the wheelchair only a few steps away.  Elevating helped mine some and couldn't handle full massage but gentle touching or pressing on them provided some minor relief.  Hated when they would just laugh when I asked if there was anything that could be done about the painful swollen feet.

  • I didn't have any swelling with my first section, but it hit hard with the second! DH went to the store late one night to get some compression socks for me and they helped a ton. Hope you can get some relief soon!

  • I remember looking down a few weeks later surprised I had normal feet again and was amazed
  • I'm sorry to hear you all went through this, but I'm glad it's normal. My feet feel like they may pop at any minute!
  • I had major swollen feet and ankles up until today. I am 9 days pp and its gone out of nowhere! So weird because they were bad.

  • I had this too! It hurt so bad! Drink lots of water and I took a (very slow) walk down my street which I swear made all the difference.
  • Mine came on around day 3-4 and stayed through the end of the first week, two weeks tops.  I used support stockings and drank lots of water.  My doctor actually told me to walk and not put my feet up.  My feet and legs were no where near as swollen as what yours sound to be though.

  • I believe my swelling lasted for about 3 weeks post birth. Had bad swelling in my feet and calves.
  • It is very normal because of the fluid that's pushed through you in the Iv. Drink a lot of water, move your ankles and ice packs

  • Mine also lasted about a week! My feet have never been so swollen ever!
Drink lots of water, also taking an ibuprofen also helped some swelling
  • I had terrible swelling from my feet to mid-thigh. The nurse about freaked out when I got to the hospital after my water broke. She said, "That looks terrible!". I told her they actually weren't as bad as they had been earlier in the day since I had gone to bed for a couple hours and my feet were up. After my c-section they were horrendous again. It felt like the tops of my feet were going to split open. The swelling didn't go completely down until somewhere around 3-4 weeks post-partum.

  • Thanks everyone, I feel better! My swelling started going down but then I was put on blood pressure medicine and I blew up again :( Slowing starting to go down again
  • My swelling lasted about 3 weeks. It was horrible. I thought my feet were going to look like that forever. Compression socks helped and keeping my feet up.
  • 3 weeks for me too...fred flintstone feet the whole time. Seeing them normal was shocking at first!
