Rash - Help??

Please excuse the long description. I am trying to give out as much information as possible. If anyone has any ideas, or has been through something similar, PLEASE help! Thank you for reading!

Okay so my 10 month old has this rash, and it's been there for about a week. Location - right hip. At first sight (it was smaller than in the pic, about half size) I thought it was diaper rash, so I put destin on it. 2 days later and it was still there and it looked a little darker in the center, so we thought maybe it was a bite. But we found no puncture to the skin. The next day it was even worse, small bumps around the edges, so we tried Hydrocortisone 1%. And I called his doctor and made an appointment for the next morning. Saturday we went in and saw the PNP. She ruled out diaper rash immediately and thought it was a bite due to the coloring. Rx antibiotics orally and benedryl with a follow up appointment Monday with his regular doctor. Monday he saw his doctor and she didn't think it was a bite at all, she thinks allergic reaction to something that touched his skin or sensitive skin. Rx 2 ointments and said to continue antibiotics and benedryl, with a follow up Wednesday. So today I take him in and there really has been no change. She seems stumped by it. She's putting him on Zyrtec also and he's going back on Monday for another follow up.
He's been just fine throughout the whole deal, I don't think he even knows it's there. No swelling, no itching. No fever, no loss of appetite, no out of ordinary fussiness, not even when I change his diaper or put ointment on it.
I haven't changed any of his regulars: diapers, wipes, soap, laundry soap, foods - I haven't even bought him new clothes, so if it's an allergic reaction I don't see why it would just now pop up. This area is typically always covered because he's always got a diaper and clothes on. He hasn't spent much time outside recently either.

I am so frustrated at this point. With 3 doctor visits in under a week, we've been very busy trying to make up time and I just plain feel bad for my little guy (although I really do believe it's bothering me more than it bothers him). Luckily, he's been a total champ at the doctor's office each time -Sits on my lap and waits in the lobby, plays in the room and waits for the doctor, takes his medicine great.

Does anyone have ANY ideas or suggestions at all?! I so appreciate all feedback. I figured since the doctor doesn't seem to know what it is (which is thoroughly irritating my husband) I would at least try to reach out to a larger audience for advice.

Thanks!!

Re: Rash - Help??

  • AND I hate that he's taking all the medicine! If it's something completely different I really don't want him on all this crap!.

  • My doc did mention yeast infection was a possibility, but a really weird spot for it. Thanks for the input! This is killing me!

  • Could be yeast.

Looks a little like psoriasis too. If you or your H have psoriasis you should mention that to your doc.
My DD had a psoriasis outbreak when she was 7-8 months old. They gave me all sorts of creams over 4 months figuring it was just a rash, then yeast, them allergy, then something else. They finally did a biopsy and determined it was psoriasis. They never ASKED me if there was a family history because they didn't think that's what it was.

    Good luck with the Lotrimin.
  • Looks like yeast to me, too.

  • When i get eczema, it looks like this - particularly when I get it because an area of my skin was damp for a long time. LO gets something like this on her chin under her paci.

It is weeping, though? If that's the case I'm inclined to say infection.

It kind of looks like tinea. Tinea corpus takes on this kind of appearance in the diaper area sometimes. How did the lotramin work out?

It kind of looks like tinea. Tinea cruris can takes on this kind of appearance from what i understand. How did the lotramin work out?
  • Check this out - the pics are of an bad quality and on adult skin, but the description sounds right. If this is it, you need a specific anti-fungal. If this is the problem, you'd expect the rash to itch a bit though.

Cruris is towards end of page.

  • @kristine822. How did the rash situation pan out?
  • It's gone with the help of Lotrimin! I am so relieved and so thankful for all the input and suggestions from this group!
(and sorry for just now replying - I'm watching my niece who's 6 weeks old while my sister is waiting for her daycare spot to open and I've been pulled in all directions lately!)
I noticed a big difference in color after one Lotrimin application and it was gone 4-5 days after. I assume it took so long because it was there for almost a week without proper diagnosis.

  • That is a yeast infection.  There is a product you can buy on Amazon Triple Paste AF - make sure you get the AF.  It is expensive but worth it. I always have some on hand.  It has 2% of the antifungal component rather than 1% that is in the lotrimin.  Sounds like you have cleared it up, but I would purchase this, as Lortimin doesn't always clear my daughter up.

@Kristine822 I'm happy to hear it. I was feeling pretty bad for you and your LO - it is so frustrating to be able to see your LO's problem with your eyes, know the interventions aren't working and not know what to do next. Now we know it was fungal. This explains why the various antibiotics didn't work.

In anycase, happy news. If, by chance, you are cloth diapering LO, I'm wondering if it is worth stripping the diapers at this point (I happen to be stripping some myself at the moment, so this came to mind)? If you aren't cloth diapering then, it sounds like all is right as rain.
